"How is it that we've only been on break a week and already I'm bored?" I muttered aloud, the question mainly aimed towards myself and not my friends."We could go see a movie?" My best friend, Sidney, suggested, causing a few people around the group to groan. Sidney was always trying to be positive and not complain, so she was basically the polar opposite of me, but somehow she became the blond to my brunette the moment we met back in middle school.
John Stalk, whose crush on Sidney was obvious to everyone but Sidney, spoke up. "That's actually a good idea. We could see an action movie. Or whatever you were thinking, Sidney." The redhead blinked in her direction, and she smiled.
Hannah, the sporty of the group, butted in with her own opinion. "Dudes, we already saw two movies this week. Plus, there isn't anything good out."
A few other voices agreed with her, and while they all argued it out, I leaned back against the mall bench where we were sitting. With my brand new sunglasses on my head and a pair of flip-flops, I was all ready for the beach, but the fact that we lived in the middle of nowhere didn't help my situation.
I sat up straighter and opened my eyes when I realized that one voice was not adding his opinion. Nolen Avery. Nolen was the 'bad boy' of the school, which was a stereotype that I thought was a little unnecessary, but I supposed with his signature leather jacket and tough appearance, he fit the title. Today, though, Nolen sat in silence, scribbling away at a pad of paper.
This perked my interest, obviously, and I studied him some more. Normally Nolen was flirting and being a jerk, and if John wasn't his best friend I would object to him hanging out with us, but right now as he pressed a blue pen down on paper, his eyebrows crunched up together, he looked almost cute.
"So California, Nolen, are you two okay with a movie?"
I snapped out of my daze and answered the question that was thrown towards us with a quick nod.

Not only did my friends pick the worst action movie ever, but there wasn't even one actor that was attractive. I wasn't asking for Channing Tatum, but someone that wasn't forty, please!
"Oh look, another car chase scene." I whispered over to Sidney, who was leaning forward in her seat, hanging onto every word. She sent me a glare, as I know she hated when people talked in movies. Which made me question how we were even friends.
A shuffle at the end of the aisle distracted me, and I watched Nolen leave the theater.
"Why's he leaving?" I whispered to Hannah.
She shrugged, and mumbled something.
"What?"
"He wanted snacks." She whispered louder.
I stood up. "That's a good idea, I need Gummy Worms."
Awkwardly moving past everyone in the seats to my right, I scurried towards the door Nolen had left. I know I was acting not myself, but I needed to know what was on that list. Besides, I actually was craving candy, and maybe I could trick Nolen into paying.
When I reached the hallway outside, I had to scan the room. Finally I spotted him and I hurried towards where he was heading. Nolen had reached the snack counter, and I arrived just in time to hear him ask the girl behind the counter for her number. She giggled and happily obliged, causing me to roll my eyes.
"Really Nolen, the snack girl?"
He seemed surprised by my voice, flinching slightly, but turned around anyway. When his hazel eyes met mine, a smirk formed on his face. "Hey California. You're getting food too?"
