I rubbed my hands against my eyes as I waited for John to show up. The redhead was twenty minutes late for our "date".
Before you freak out, I hadn't forgot about the growing feelings I had for Nolen and I definitely wasn't about to go on a date with his best friend. I wasn't that type of girl. No, I was just meeting up with John to discuss a few things.
Mainly being Nolen, and his upcoming birthday.
I was sitting at a table at the mall, across from a Wendy's. I had bought a diet coke and was sipping away at it while I waited John to show.
After another three minutes, I saw a pair of Vans approach and I looked up to see our redheaded friend walking towards me. He pulled out a chair across, and sat down.
"You're late." I frowned, and he held up his hands in surrender.
"I couldn't help it! Nolen called and wanted to hang out, and I had to bs my way out of it. Right now, he thinks I'm at my Grandma's helping her garden."
I twitched, not wanting anyone to lie to Nolen. What if he saw us, or someone else saw us and told him.
I shook the thought from my head. We'd be fine. I was just trying to organize a present for him.
John reached across the table and tapped my forehead, causing me to blink out of the haze I was in. "So what did you want to talk to me about?" he asked, "what's so secret?"
I glanced around and whispered, like I belonged in a spy movie, "Nolen's birthday."
John nodded thoughtfully. "Oh yeah, I got him a pair of converse."
I rolled my eyes. Nolen had told me that that was what John got him every year. "I don't want to get him a gift. I want to get him a party. I was thinking we could organize a surprise party? Maybe at your house?" It was a widely known fact that John had the nicest house in town. I thought mine was big, but John's had three pools and a spa.
His eye's lit up. "Cool! Yeah, we could definitely do it at my house. When?"
I had already predicted this answer, so I pulled out my notebook which I had wrote everything in. "Well, his birthday isn't for another two weeks, so I was thinking that we could have a surprise party next Friday. Maybe a pool party? And I can order a cake and food, and stuff."
John nodded thoughtfully. "You get a cake, but make it really big, okay? I'll handle the other food, and the invitations."
Awesome! This was exactly how I wanted the talk to go. I grinned, and reached my hand across the table for a high five. John reached out and returned the favor, but missed the high five, which caused me to laugh at his actions. Eventually, he started laughing too.
I didn't know this yet, but two tables away sat Cynthia Portland, one of Nolen's ex-flings. Along with Cynthia sat her iPhone, which she pulled out and took a picture with it, posting it on Social Media along with the caption 'New couple dating?'.
In that moment, I was blissfully unaware at the events in the making, and how they would change everything.
'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'
When I got home later, I pulled out my computer and powered it on. Then, in the search engine, I pulled up twitter to see what was new.
I looked at my notifications, shocked to see that I had a ton of new notifications. Normally, I never had any, but this time I was mentioned forty times. What?
I clicked on a picture, pulling it up. I noticed it was a picture of John and I staring into each others eyes, while laughing. My stomach started to clench as I read through the comments. I knew this was taken while we were talking about Nolen, but apparently other people didn't.
Oh, gosh, this was not happening. I was not dating Nolen's best friend, and my best friend's crush. But there were over a hundred comments on the picture. Some people called me words I couldn't repeat, and others questioned the photo.
"Poor Sidney. Her #*&^ best friend is with her boyfriend? Not cool, California."
"I always knew she was a gold digger."
"Dating the richest guy in town? Nice job, California."
"She's not even pretty."
"Eww are they really dating?"
"%$#% wow didn't expect this. Sidney is going to be furious, lol!"
I kept scrolling through the comments, looking for any indication that Sidney or Nolen had seen the picture. Finally, I got to one comment that brought tears to my eyes.
Nolen had commented, "glad my best friend has found someone as ugly as him to date."
He thought we were dating? I thought back to when John told me he had lied to Nolen about where he was. Nolen must think that because he lied, that meant this stupid rumor was true.
I shut the computer after reporting the post, and hurried over to my phone. I entered the password and tried to call Nolen. It went straight to voicemail.
I called again, and again, but it still went to voicemail. Finally, I shot him a text.
Me: Nolen, it's not what it looks like. We aren't dating, and I need to explain what we were talking about. Please, call me back.
After I hit send, I dialed Sidney's number. She too, didn't answer.
I closed my eyes, feeling alone. This was such a mess. I didn't know what I was doing, but before I could think I was leaving my room, car keys in hand. I got into my dad's car, one of his cars, and passed the pedal, peeling out of the driveway.
As I drove, my head raced. I wasn't being smart, driving when my head wasn't in the game, and I could feel the car swerving down the road. It must have looked like I had been drinking, but I hadn't. I was just really, really desperate to get to Nolen.
When I arrived at his house, I parked the car and locked it behind me. I saw Nolen's car in the driveway, and my heart leaped. Good. He was home.
I ran towards the door, knocking franticly. A minute passed, but I heard footsteps on the other side. the handle moved, and I felt like crying.
The door opened wide, reveling a tall girl. I gulped, taking in her messy hair and thin body . She was pretty, really pretty, and my heart dropped.
Behind her, I saw Nolen peek around the door. His jaw was tense and angry, but he still looked beautiful. His eyes made contact with mine, and they were cold, though. They were missing the gleam I had grown used to, and even though I was far away, I could feel the hatred radiating off his body.
"California. What do you want." His voice was distant and unemotional.
I looked at the girl again, before making eye contact with him. "Nothing. Anymore."
With that, I turned around and hurried to my car, not looking back.
