"Want to know something funny?"Nolen looked up from the book he was reading. We were each sitting on our own bed, him reading while I watched a cooking show in Italian. I had no idea what they were saying, but the food looked good. Ironically enough, they were making American Food, which in my opinion anyone could make. Fry a burger, throw some ketchup on the plate, and ta-da! America Cuisine at its finest.
Nolen rubbed his eyes, obviously starting to get tired. "What's funny?" He asked in a board tone.
I reached for the remote and turned the volume on the TV down. "Back home, people refer to you as a 'bad boy'. There are rumors about you being involved in violent fights and dog fighting. People are scared of you, Nolen."
His expression didn't change, and he eyed me. I knew I had sparked his interest. "And you? What do think?"
I laughed dryly. "You have a bucket list. If anything, you're a fourteen year old Tumblr girl stuck inside a seventeen year old male body."
He rolled his eyes.
"Really though, why do you let rumors about you spread around? They obviously aren't true." Right? The Nolen I knew couldn't be involved in illegal stuff, he was a little angel, but what if there was a different side of him that I didn't know of? I shook the thought away.
He shrugged, putting his book on the desk next to his twin bed. "Girls find a bad boy insanely attractive. Isn't that why you have the hots for me?"
I chocked. What had he just said? I did NOT have the hots for him. I mean, sure, he was hot, but I didn't like him!
"First of all, who even says that? Second of all, sorry to break it to you Nolen but you aren't that attractive." I was lying about the last part, and Nolen knew it as he flexed his arms on purpose. I tried to ignore the twist my stomach made as I watched his muscles tighten up.
"The girls we encountered while sightseeing today seemed to think otherwise."
My head started to pound as I thought back to those barbies we had crossed paths with earlier in the day. We had stopped to get ice cream and while inside the store, four blonds wearing crop tops and shorts that couldn't pass for underwear sauntered right up to Nolen. They were all over him, I mean all over him, and it took all my willpower not to throw my cone at them. But wasting my perfectly good food was not something I planned to do. Instead, as one brushed her lips directly on his chest, I just grabbed Nolen's hand and pulled the smirking boy out of there.
"Can we not talk about those fake pre-teen brats?" I pouted, causing Nolen to wink at me.
His smirk was really getting on my nerves. "Careful California, or someone might think you're jealous."
I tilted my head, playing oblivious. "Jealous of what? I don't see anything I could be jealous of." I looked around me, and even lifted up the sheets, looking under my bed.
Suddenly, a pillow hit me and I wiped out, falling back against my bed. I didn't move, holding my head while moaning.
"Shoot." Nolen stood up, rushing over to me. "Cali, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you...."
He never got to finish his apology, because my pillow had hit him before another word could leave his mouth. I pranced up, done faking hurt, and hit him again, grunting for effect.
"Take that!"
Nolen looked up at me wide eyed, before playfulness danced across his eyes. He grabbed his own, and jumped up onto his bed.
I screamed as a pillow flew past my face, dogging it. I was good at this, and out for blood. "Hyaaaaa!" I shouted as I hopped onto the floor, sending a pillow towards his feet. He fell off the bed, towards the ground, and disappeared onto the other side of the mattress, hidden from my sight.
