"The killing of 5 billion people-"
"Known as the modern plague-"
"The virus killed millions and billions of people-"
"There is no cure but some are immune-"
"The virus has stopped spreading but the last of the population remains at 200 people-"
"The Reapers continue killing off inhabitants leaving society at 200 even-"
"The population continues to dwindle thanks to the Reapers-"
"Turn that shit off Avey," Brinn commanded.
"Nothing but news about the virus. We get it," Avery rolled her eyes at the wasted media.
"Help me out here," Brinn suggested while motioning her head towards the heavy object in her hand. Avery got up from the couch and started to help Brinn maneuver the dinner table. They moved it to the hallway where a man was standing.
"You have them?" Brinn asked.
"Yeah, yeah," he handed her three ration books. "All empty, ready for selling or bribery," he glared at Brinn assuming what she would do with the books.
"You don't know shit man just take the table," Brinn glared back at him. She was not a girl to be messed with.
"I thought I had a right to know what I was dealing with."
"You have a right to take the table and not ask any questions about it. Only if you're wise Z," Brinn backed away and shut the door leaving the man, known as Z, alone in the hallway with the table.
"More books?" Avery asked.
"Yes, just in case," Brinn looked down at the empty, unused books. She started looking through them to see if they were really empty and unused as he had said.
"We can't keep doing this Brinn. We might get searched one day-"
"Stop Avery," Brin interrupted and Avery quickly shut up. Brinn liked to call her Avey, never Avery. Lately she had been doing it a lot. Something was deeply troubling Brinn.
"Can I go out now?" Avery blurted.
"Curfew soon. Especially soon if the Reapers attack. Stay inside."
"I'm 21 Brinn I shouldn't even have to ask," Avery pushed.
"I'm 23 and I'm taking care of you."
"You're not my mom," Avery looked down at the ground.
"Avery why are you being so difficult today?" Brinn sighed, obviously hurt by what Avery said. "Just go. Be back before curfew, and be safe. They want everybody."
"I-I'm sorry Brinn," Avery said with some difficulty.
"You can go," Brinn swallowed and walked to the next room away from Avery. Avery sighed but walked out the door. She was stopped by Z, who was still trying to push the table out of the way. "Need help?" Avery eyed him with amusement that the man still hadn't managed to move the table.
"If you don't mind."
"Where to?" Avery asked as she lifted the table with Z.
"Just outside, I have somebody waiting for me."
They started to walk down the hallway to the front of the building. As Avery walked she observed the walls that were pealing away due to the water leakage. A drop fell on Avery's head but she didn't make a move, clearly used to it. Z opened the door and outside is Nathaniel. He looked at Avery and smiled. "I was hoping to see you," Nathaniel spoke and came towards her to grab the table from her, "I can take it from here."
