"Mia, you and Davey can have the two rooms upstairs and I can take the one downstairs," dad was walking around frantically, moving and picking up boxes to make space for more of our furniture. Dad was running his hand through his thinning hair, talking to himself while I stared out the window, watch cars drive by our road. I looked over to the left and saw a hint of a large blue house in between the trees, almost identical to ours only ours was a pale yellow. "Or do you think that I should have the room upstairs and you can have the room downstairs for more privacy. Or-"
"Dad. I'm fine with having the upstairs bedroom with Davey," I shut my dad off from rambling. "I'll go get Davey and show him the upstairs. Love you!"
I walked outside and onto the porch to the backyard. Davey was out in the backyard, a foot or so away from the woods. Davey was staring at the woods, still as a statue. Davey was an interesting seven year old. Instead of watching the Saturday cartoons, Davey watched National Geographic and the History Channel. Instead of him reading comic books, Davey read encyclopedias and biographies on our presidents. He just finished the book on Lincoln and was working on getting this new book about George Washington. Since Davey was the way he was it's harder for him to make friends. People always think he's a weirdo for knowing the names of every kid Thomas Jefferson had and why Custer's Last Stand was his last stand.
"Davey! Come on inside!" I shouted out across the yard. Davey turned around and gave me a look that said, "Shut up!". I gave him a superior look and Davey rolled his eyes and walked over to me, but not before turning around and staring back at the woods for the last time. "Come on, we need to check out our rooms," I rest my hand on Davey's head as we walked up the stairs.
Davey and I climbed the two flights of stairs until we reached the landing. There were three doors on both sides of the hallway and one at the very end. Davey and I opened the doors and checked out the rooms. There was a Jack and Jill sort of room with a full bath connecting the two. There was another bathroom and two other bedrooms on the other side and I was guessing the room at the end was another bedroom.
"Why doesn't dad sleep upstairs too?" Davey asked as we walked through the Jack and Jill bathroom. "There're more than enough rooms for us."
"I guess dad doesn't want to wake us up if he gets called in to the hospital in the middle of the night," I say as I run my hands along the wall of the second room. "So, what room do you want to have?"
"Can I have the two rooms?" Davey asked, clasping his hands together. "One could be my office space and the other could be where my bed is! I have too many books!"
"Ask dad, Davey," I sighed, running my hand through the soft curls on his head. I was very protective over my little brother after our mom died in a freak accident while she was hunting. "I don't care."
I walked down the hall and opened the door on the very end. I opened the door and walked into the large room. I walked into the middle of it and admired the two large windows both over looking the front yard and the woods. I had more than enough space for my bed, dresser, and desk. I opened one of the two doors and almost fainted when I saw the large, walk-in closet almost as big as the bedroom space. I walked over to the other door and opened it, not prepared to face a finished bathroom with both a shower and a bathtub. I stepped onto the tile and squealed when I felt the heat radiate off my toes.
"Found my room!" I call out to Davey who ran in and almost fell over when he hit the tiles in the bathroom.
"Okay, if you get this room then I definitely get the two rooms," Davey shook his head, walking into the shower and sitting down on the bench. "I thought we were poor."
"Dad got the promotion," I explain, sitting down next to him. "This place is kind of creepy though."
"What're you talking about?" Davey asked. "This town is cool! It's not too big and it's not too small."
