"God, I'm so sorry," I groan, getting off of the boy who turned out to just be... a boy. "I can't believe I did that."

"No, it's okay," the boy shook off the grass on his pants. "Great tackle by the way."

"Oh... thanks."

We stood there awkwardly. I tried not to look at his face because I was too embarrassed for tackling him. What little glimpse I got of him was enought to know that he was cute. Like, a quirky, funny guy who always had the jokes.

"So... um... yeah, I gotta go unpack," I backed up slowly, trying to ignore my burning face that was no doubt red. "I'm really sorry about tackling you."

"No, that's okay," the guy shook his head, straightening out his hooded sweatshirt. "What's a few bruises?"

I nodded and laughed half-heartedly before turning away and running off the way I came. When I got back inside I saw Davey was sitting down on the floor, opening a National Geographic magazine that had a topless girl on the front... why does National Geographic always put topless people on the cover? This is the third time they've done this. Dad was already taking out my bed and bringing up the parts up the stairs. I ran  and grabbed my bed post and ran up the stairs with it.

After a few trips of dad and I not talking to each other we finally had to carry the queen mattress upstairs. Dad and I looked warily at the Tempurpedic beast and we each grabbed two corners and walked it over to the stairs. I lost my grip and watched as it slid down the stairs. Dad looked at me as he walked down and slowly dragged the mattress up the stairs, not really needing my help.

In about half an hour dad and I brought up the mattresses. I put Davey's bed together right away and helped him put the sheets on. Davey quickly fell asleep, not bothering to brush his teeth or change into his pajamas. I, on the other hand, walked over to my new room and slowly put my bed together. Just as I was putting the mattress on the bed, dad walked into my room, his cell phone out.

"Mia, the hospital called," dad said as he put his phone away. "The police found a dead body... or... half a body and they want me to look at it."

"Okay, ew," I say, sitting down on my bed. "And what do you mean 'half a body'?"

"I mean the police found half a body in the woods," dad repeated. "They're out in the woods right now trying to find the other half."

"Oh," I say, cringing at the image I was getting.

"Can I trust you here alone?" Dad asked. "Or do you want to come? You don't have to see the body if you don't want to but it'd be some cool father daughter time."

"Um... dad? I still have to get my bed ready," I reply. "And school's tomorrow."

"It's not like you're going to learn anything tomorrow. It's just the first day," dad explained. "Come on, let's just go. The longest we'll be there is half an hour. I just want to take a look at the girl and figure out what exactly happened."

"Do I have to go?" I whined, getting up and walking over to dad. "I'm going to be exhausted tomorrow!"

"Get your shoes on, Mia, and meet me in the truck," dad ordered, walking out of the room, not bothering to hear my complaining.

Five minutes later dad pulled into the parking lot to the hospital. Dad ran over to the main doors and up to the front desk where a nurse stood waiting. I walked over to my dad and tried to listen to whatever the nurse was telling my dad but dad noticed me eavesdropping and stopped the nurse from whatever it was she was saying.

"Mia, why don't you go to the vending machine and get a soda or something," dad reached into his back pocket and pulled out a dollar.

"But, I want to know what's going on!" I protested, not taking the dollar bill and instead crossing my arms. "I want to know what happened to the girl!"
