CHAPTER 4.
The One in Which I Have A One-Night Stand With My Roommate (Because Of A Stupid-Ass Movie)

It was soon after my first assignment that Lillith and Raymond deemed me ready to officially take up the mantle of Abhorsen and leave me and Barry to our own devices. I shifted to Barry's apartment as his roommate, even though Ashalis pays me a huge salary and even gave me a mansion on the outskirts of Central City. I left my past in Midway City behind, and started afresh in Central City. I also took up a job as a manga artist again, although this time I started working under the pen name of Lee Stirling. Fortunately, I had just started out on my career as Nova Stirling before I had died and hadn't gained much fame till then, so it wasn't really difficult to take on a new identity. Also, my new blonde wig helped a lot. Back in Midway City, Nova Lee Stirling was pronounced dead due to accidental drowning, without the body ever being recovered.

Accidental. Ha. I wish.

The next four years passed by without any major incident. I stopped Amersian idiots from wrecking too much havoc, and Barry got a job in the Central City Police Department as their Crime Scene Investigator (although he still moonlit as my human). I became really close to Barry's family too over the years, especially with Iris, although they only knew me as Barry's roommate, who he had met in college. And with my stories being taken up by some major publication groups and my career finally taking off, life was going pretty great - that is, until the day the particle accelerator exploded.

4 YEARS LATER

I woke up to the sound of my gloves buzzing on my bedside table. Yawning, I sat up - and flashbacks from yesterday night came rushing back to me.

Oh. My. God.

Slowly, I turned my head to the left, but the bed space beside me was empty. He must have already left for work. Thank god. Breakfast would've been really awkward.

Barry's white t-shirt was lying at the foot of my bed, right where I had stripped him of it the night before, and since it was the only piece of clothing near me, I picked it up and pulled it on. I tried to push last night's memories to the back of my mind as I reached out for my gloves. Oh god, how the hell will I ever face him again?

Groaning, I put on the gloves before pressing a small grey dot on the wrist. Instantly, a blue hologram screen appeared above my palm. It had a message from Raymond.

R: get ur lazy ass outta bed. busy day ahead. Attached to it was a pdf file.

Great. As if I wasn't having a shitty enough day already, apparently it was about to get shittier. Whenever Raymond said that it was going to be a busy day, it usually meant that there was going to be a lot of deaths involved, like in a bomb blast or a major earthquake. Spontaneous, successive and violent deaths like those usually resulted in newly-formed Amersians running wild around the city, and I had the extremely delightful job of chasing after them.

The pdf file had information about the upcoming disaster, although it was a little vague. I think Ashalis still doesn't trust me much; they never tell me exactly what's going to happen, probably in case I try to stop it or something. The file only had the absolute necessary details I needed to prepare myself - number of deaths (94); time (8:32:03 PM); and location (Scientific Technological and Advanced Research Laboratories, Central City). There was also some advise about how to handle the situation at the bottom of the page, but my eyes were stuck on the space marked location. STAR Labs.

Shit shit shit.

I jumped out of bed and ran out of my room, hoping Barry was still home. No such luck. His cereal bowl was in the sink, which meant that he had already had breakfast and must have left for the CCPD. I couldn't help feeling a little miffed. We always had breakfast together.
