CHAPTER 6.
The One In Which I Manage To Score A Death Penalty (And Barry Gets Struck By Lightning)
Talk About A Depressing Chapter Name.

There is a reason why I don't use expulsion spells all the time to banish Amersians to the dead realm, instead of destroying them through combat - they take a huge toll on me. But there are times when there are just too many Amersians to take on - times like right now.

The disaster that Ashalis had predicted happened right on time, as usual. My eyes widened as I watched the whole thing through the light shower that had started a few minutes ago. There was an explosion down below at STAR Labs, which seemed to rise up in a mushroom  cloud. The people who had gathered outside the building to watch the event began to scatter frantically in all directions.

For some reason, I couldn't help worrying about Harrison. God I hope he isn't dead. That would suck, especially since I had only had two encounters with the guy. I was kind of hoping I'd score a third, maybe even more.

But I couldn't think about that right now. I needed to concentrate. I could almost feel the steep increase in the Amersian population in the last few minutes. Hastily, I started chanting the incantation.

I knew that something was wrong as soon as I finished the spell. Usually when I cast an expulsion spell, I can sense the Amersians moving on to the dead realm. Not today. I was sure the dead hadn't gone over to Amersia, but I couldn't locate them in this realm, either. Feeling rather confused, I called Raymond.

"Hey, did something go wrong with the spell?" I asked as soon as he picked up. "I followed the instructions as closely as I could."

Ray didn't answer right away. I heard heavy breathing on the other side, and then - "I warned you. I warned you not to do it."

"Ray, what the hell are you talking about?"

"I can't tell you right now," he said, almost in a whisper. "Ashalis will call you later and fill you in on the situation. Sit tight. And Nova?" He paused before saying in a heavy voice, "I am so, so sorry."

My phone began to ring just as I was about to unlock the door to my apartment. I had decided to go back home; there was no use waiting for news fro Ashalis all wet and half-frozen back at the hill.

I inserted my key into the lock before answering. "Lee here."

"Lee!" It was Iris, and it sounded like she was crying. "Lee, you've got to come down to Central City General at once. It's Barry. He's... he's..." she broke off, sobbing.

My heart felt like something icy had pierced through it as I worked uo the courage to ask, "Iris, what's wrong? What happened to Barry?"

"He - he got struck by lightning through the roof in his lab," Iris managed to choke out. "Look, just come down to the hospital, okay?"

"I'll be there in five," I assured her, before yanking the key out of the lock so hard it actually broke off. Great, I won't even be able to get into my own home now. Sadly though, that was the least of my worries, and I needed to get my priorities straight.

Right now, Barry needed me.

Ashalis contacted me and filled me in on the situation while I was at the hospital with Iris and Joe, waiting for the doctors to come back with a diagnosis. Apparently, I had botched up the spell really, really  badly. Instead of sending the Amersians to the dead realm, the spell had backfired and sent them straight back to their bodies. In essence, I had performed necromancy.
