CHAPTER 5.
The One In Which I Meet Dr. Wells Again (And He Doesn't Send My Ass Straight To Prison)

Ashalis advised getting ready two hours before an assignment, since there was always a one in a million chance that their predicted timing may be a little off, so by 6:30 in the evening, I was all suited up in my Ashalis-provided Abhorsen uniform (which I refused to wear at first, but after Dr. Wells saw me during my first assignment and nearly got me sent to human prison, I decided that it wasn't that bad).

The uniform consisted of an all-black, skin-tight jumpsuit, made of a light, synthetic and combat-friendly material very similar to my gloves. It was tougher than it looked though, and could act as a full body armour too. Black combat boots and my "weaponizer", as I liked to call my gloves, completed the look, and I had tied my shiny silver hair into a high ponytail. This was probably the only time I didn't have to wear my blonde wig, and my head felt a few pounds lighter. I finally donned on my black mask, and I was ready.

I usually always had Barry guiding me through a comm. device, but since I still couldn't get myself to call him, I decided to go solo. I parked my car a little way away from STAR Labs before heading towards a small hill behind the lab, which, Ashalis had advised, would be the best vantage point.

I had just settled down on a grassy patch from which I could see the lab clearly when Raymond called.

"Raymond, to what do I owe this pleasure?"

Raymond sounded nervous as he cleared his throat. "Look kid, we seem to have underestimated the, um, extent of the situation."

"What are you talking about?" I asked, frowning. "How widespread is this thing going to be, Ray?"

"Well," he said hesitantly, "if Ashalis' predictions are correct - and they usually are - this... uh, it's probably going to be a city-wide disaster."

"What?" I screamed at him. I had never, ever, in my four year career as an Abhorsen, dealt with that big a situation before. "Raymond, how the effin' hell am I gonna control a city-wide outbreak?"

"Ashalis does have an emergency expulsion spell for situations like this," Raymond said tensely, "but Nova?" He lowered his voice. "I'm probably gonna get into a lot of trouble with Ashalis for telling you this, but there's a reason they did not teach you this spell. It's extremely dangerous, and there's a thirty percent failure rate. I'd say that's pretty damn high."

I frowned. "Well, I can't exactly fight my way through ninety-four Amersians, and none of the expulsion spells I know can cover that large a radius, so I guess I don't really have another choice."

"Your call. I'm sending the incantation to you right now. And kid?" He sounded concerned as he added, "Be careful."

My gloves buzzed, indicating that I had received a new message. Before I got the chance to open it though, I sensed someone walking up behind me. Startled, I turned around.

It was Dr. Harrison Wells.

XXXXXXXXXX

Even though four years had passed since our last meeting, he hadn't changed much - he still had those dreamy blue eyes, the same ruffled-up black hair. He seemed as much surprised to see me as I was to see him.

"You," he said, blinking. "You're the woman who broke into my lab all those years ago."

"No, I'm not!" I protested. Thank Ashalis for the the voice-changing apparatus in my mask which made me sound like a female robot.

"Yes, you are," Dr. Wells insisted. "I'd recognize that silver hair anywhere."

Damn it! "Alright, fine, I am," I grumbled in a defeated tone, pulling off my mask. There was no use denying it now. "Are you going to call the police?"

"No. Are you going to punch me in the face again?"

I smiled. "No."

He gave me a look-over once, and I couldn't help self-consciously running a hand over my suit, smoothing out the wrinkles. "Don't change much, do you?" he remarked. "What's with the get-up?"

"Um, Halloween party. Thought I'd stop by here and check out your particle-accelerator thingy before heading on over there." Ugh, why did I always come up with the dumbest lies when I was with him?

"First off, it's not a thingy, it's a historic moment which will probably redefine science as we know it and change the course of the human race forever. And second of all, a Halloween party in December?"

I shrugged. "What can I say? I've got some crazy friends."

"And are these the same friends who dared you to break into my lab four years ago?" Dr. Wells asked with a ghost of a smile. "You should probably find yourself some new company, miss."

"What, company like you?" I said, laughing. "And please, you've got to stop calling me miss. The name's Nova." That was technically not true, since officially my name here was Lee Stirling, but I was not comfortable giving him my real name, especially since he had seen me in my Abhorsen-guise now.

"Nova," he repeated, testing out the name on his tongue. "A pretty name for an extremely pretty girl."

Thank god it was dark enough by now that he couldn't see my flaming red cheeks. He extended his hand, and I shook it. "I'm Harrison Wells, as you already know," he said (wow, cocky much?) "You can call me Harrison."

I nodded. "Um, Docto - Harrison?"

"Hmm?" He looked deep in thought as he stood beside me, staring down at his lab, where people were beginning to gather outside.

"I was just wondering why you, er, haven't called the police on me yet."

He turned towards me and flashed me a smile, which made me feel rather giddy. "Today's probably one of the happiest days of my life, Nova. I'm definitely not going to ruin it by getting the police involved."

"And that's the only reason?"

"How many more do you need?"

"It's just - it doesn't explain why you didn't report my break-in to the police all those years ago."

He just gave me a small smile before looking down at his watch. "I'm afraid it's time for me to go, I'm going to have to give a speech in a few minutes." He turned around to leave, but before he did, he looked back at me once. "It was nice meeting you again... Nova."
