She slipped through my fingers like glass. I would say water, but water doesn't hurt on the way through. I had to go back to the dark hallways of the castle, and lie awake knowing I almost had her. It was mere stun that stopped me from achieving the seemingly impossible.

Why did I let her get away?

I left my room early the next morning, prepared to go out and look for her. But unfortunately, my father was expecting my early departure. So, begrudgingly, I approached the throne room.

"Ah, son. Good to see you." My father sat upon his throne, wearing a forest green robe. The gold trimmings were made of real gold of course. Sometimes I couldn't help but wonder whether these luxuries could be used on the kingdom.

"Yes father- is there a reason you requested my presence?" My father shook his head, dishevelling his now greying blonde hair.
"I'm afraid I have some bad news. We are discontinuing the search for the thief."
"Why? She is still at large, she-" He guffawed.
"She? Please tell me, my son, that that was a a mere slip of the tongue? There is surely no wha you could be suggesting to me, that this thief, this- this scoundrel, could be a woman? Are you deluded?"

His laughs echoed the room, but my fathers eyes remained on me, burning.

"I don't care what you say- It is happening. We have no evidence of the even existence of this thief other than the word of the townspeople, and as much as I believe them it is time for this goose chase to come to an end. Understand?"
"Father, I was going to suggest that it could be a woman-"
My fathers face paled.

Oh god. What have I said...

"A woman? Oh dear son, you are many things but...

You're clearly not smart, are you?" He guffawed.
"Of course it's not a woman! Do you see the thief in skirts and a corset? Of course not. Now enough of these stupid suggestions. I am ordering a final door to door search,
and you are to accompany the guards to inform them of the cease chase. Now go. A woman- what nonsense!"

He was still laughing as I left the room to prepare for the journey. What a boring day this will be.
