"You climb into the crow's nest and you can see the entire ocean." I walk into the room Kai shares with Kazimir. He's sitting on the ground with little Derek, pointing to a model of a ship.
"Oh, ahoy, princess. I was just showing my little mate here-"
"In all this pain, I never checked on him. How's he doing?"
"I, uh, I'm not sure. He's just a little one. He's asked for his mom a couple times. I told him she was busy. How'd the surgery go? Is she ok?" His face shows hope. It almost makes me cry again.
He liked her. Maybe even loved her.
"She didn't make it." I swallow hard as he loses his grin.
"What? Oh, this is horrible. She was such a sweet lady. She helped make this toy ship for the kid. What's gonna happen to him? Is there any way..."
"Highly doubtful. That's Derek's nephew. And he and Crystal already raised two kids, they have experience."
"Yeah, you're probably right." Kai sits back across from Little Derek and picks up the toy ship. "Listen, princess,"
"Jade."
"Jade. That man took everything I care about. I don't know to fight real well, but I can build. I can fix just about anything, pipes, wood, the works. I can build it too. Let me know what I can do to help."
"Right about now, you're a blessing, sent from the mother of all angels herself. Can you make weapons?"
"Sure thing. I can make some better from the ones we have now. When?"
"Day after tomorrow. I have an announcement for the base."
