I push my horse faster. The wind whips past and I'm thankful for my helmet.
"Black knight! Sir!" Luke calls. I slow my horse and stop in front of him.
"What do you want?" I ask, refusing to hide my irritation.
"You have to come back to base. We have some bad news for the princess."
Bad news? What now?
Luke and I quickly ride back to base.
"Sir! We found these three in the forest." A soldier says.
"Are you the black knight?" A woman says. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Her clothes are tattered remnants of a designer outfit. Standing with her are two twin boys.
"I am."
"We've heard a lot about you. Can you offer us safe haven?"
"Of course."
"Sir. May I discuss with you in the conference room?" Jack asks.
"Yes. Luke, direct these three to their quarters. I'll meet you in a few minutes."
"Yes, sir." He directs them away and I follow Jack to the conference room.
"What is it?" I ask, removing my helmet.
"She was in the mermaid kingdom. They barely had enough time to escape."
"Escape what?" I ask, panic in my voice.
"He poisoned the water. All the mermaids."
"No." I sit down, the shock too much to bear.
"They're all dead."
