Beau

From the shock on Mara's face, I knew she hadn't been expecting him to kiss her. That comforted me. It had actually ran across my mind when they'd walked in and he was holding her that she had liked him even when she had agreed to go out with me. But I could tell she was irritated.

For a long while we just stood there, staring at each other. I knew what she was going to say. Ella had told me. She'd told me a lot of things that I didn't want to hear. Then she had shown me.

I knew I was frustrating Ella. Since she had opened the room that I was locked in, I had been giving her the silent treatment. Even when she'd told me that she had to share something with me and had started stripping, I didn't say anything. Then when she'd turned into a huge white wolf, I somehow kept my mouth shut.

All I knew was that I was in deep crap, and some chick that I had thought was a normal girl was suddenly a tenacious werewolf.

Finally, Mara spoke. "Did she tell you?"

I snorted. "No, she showed me. Did you know about all this?"

She sat on the couch and looked down at the floor. "Not until the night before I ran away. I guess now you see why I ran."

Oh yeah, I see. Some crazy chick who can turn into a wolf won't let me out of her sight. She claims we're "mates", or some crap like that.

The night Ella got me out of the room flashed into my mind. She'd ran to me and hugged me, crying. I had been relieved to see her, thinking she was going to set me free. Until her arms against mine had caused me to almost fall over. Something had passed through us, and since then I hadn't been thinking straight.

And I hadn't really been thinking about Mara. Sure, I'd wondered where she was, whether she'd known about all this. But I wasn't thinking about running. I wanted to, but it was like my mind wouldn't let me plan an escape.

"So," I said, sitting down beside of her. "This isn't all a dream, huh?"

She shook her head, smiling sadly.

"My head is so screwed up," I told her, needing to spill my guts. I hadn't talked to anyone since I'd been brought there.

"I understand," she said. "But don't run away. That's why I was in pain that last night. If you get away from your mate you'll end up like I was."

The worry in her voice made me laugh, even though it wasn't funny. So that's why she had been like that. That's how Xander had known about her pain.

"I won't run. I don't understand why, but I can't plan an escape. My mind won't let me. She touched me, and something went through me like an electrical shock. It was insane. I think she did something to me."

She cracked up laughing. I glared at her. I'd just shared with her something that was worrying me, and she had laughed at it.

"Thanks," I muttered, standing back up.

"No," she apologized. "I didn't mean to laugh. I just didn't know what else to do."

"She told me that we had to end it." I brought it up, wanting to get it over with.

"Their our mates. From what they say, it will happen sooner or later."

I brushed my hair out of my face, thinking about it. My hair had gotten longer since I'd been on the run for the past week and was getting in my  face. When I heard Mara gasp I knew what she'd saw.

Dang it! The bruise....

"Who did that?" she asked, angry. I knew she'd just love the answer.
