The painfully loud noise of metal on metal rang across the road. Shatters of glass rained down on the cars as blood began to fill up in the lungs of the young couple occupying the car that had spun out of control. The street held an eerie silence. Under the dull moonlight no traces of the car could be detected.
The lights were dim as nurses changed shifts. Nobody noticed as a tiny blonde nurse smuggled pills into her purse, or as a doctor and nurse locked lips in an empty room. "Carolina!" A tall sandy haired doctor shouted to a beautiful brunette nurse. She looked up solemnly, the bags below her deep brown eyes had began to reappear from under a thick coat of makeup. "Just got two new patients, 1712." He came closer as she sorted through medication. "Mind taking the night shift on the room? They're in a coma" he stopped for a moment. "Are you okay?"
She nodded and started off down the hall. "Hey Carolina!" The doctor shouted on more time. "You need to let him go"
She shrugged off his comment and made her way silently down the halls to room 1712.
The room was dark, lit only by the glow of buttons on the machines. Carolina switched on the light and brushed her think brown hair out of her face.
On the bed closest to the wall lay a man. Black and blue hair, skinny and tall. Carolina examined the cuts on his body. He was hooked up to an IV but nothing else. Carolina expected him to awaken soon.
Slowly she made her way to the bed beside the window. A woman. Curly brown hair fell on her pale face. The girl was in worse shape than the boy. Carolina smiled as she saw the gash on the patients head. She ran the back of her hand across the patients face and looked over to the other bed. The man was beautiful.
A sigh escaped her lips as she sat on the bed beside the girl. Jealousy raged from within Carolina.
The boy reminded her of her husband. A man who died in a crash three years ago. She wanted the boy for her own.
She looked down at the girl again, her hands were neatly placed on her chest as though she lay in a casket. Carolina picked up the left hand and pried off a small diamond ring with a blue band which she slid into the pocket of her scrubs.
Although she wanted badly to go sit beside the boy she remained by the girl, for she was in worse condition. Carolina smiled as the gears in her head began to turn. She wanted the boy, and would do anything to keep the girl from waking up. Getting up from the bed she used her foot to pull the plug for the heart monitor out of the wall, leaving the screen frozen in good condition. Slowly she made her way back over to the boy. She placed her hand on his chest and watched as it would rise the fall.
"Carolina?" The doctor stood outside the door. "They shouldn't be waking up anytime soon, why don't we talk"
Carolina shook her head and held the hand of the unconscious man.
"Their names are Josh and Eleanor." The doctor sighed and slowly walked away hoping for Carolina to follow.
"Josh" she whispered and smiled. Just a beautiful name for a beautiful boy she thought.
"Is he okay?" A slight voice came from the girls bed. Carolina shot up as the girl attempted to pull herself into sitting position.
"Eleanor?" Carolina asked.
"Ya. Is josh okay?"
Carolina made her way over to the girl. "You need sleep"
"Is josh okay?" She begged again and cringed in pain.
Carolina turned to the tray against the wall and searched frantically for medicine.
"I'm talking to you!" Eleanor shouted.
"I hear you." Carolina mumbled as she began to mix different medication together. "I'll give you josh." She turned around with a shot in her hand.
"What is that?" Eleanor's eyes went wide. "Look I don't do well with needles."
"It's just painkillers." Carolina placed the needle into the patients arm as she groaned in pain. "Mixed with," she trailed off
"Mixed with?" Eleanor attempted to pull away as Carolina gently pressed down on the shot.
"Strong painkillers, mixed with powerful sleeping aid, more pain killers, and some blood thinners." Carolina watched as Eleanor's eyes went foggy and her body limp. "Sweet dreams." Carolina smiled and repositioned the body as it had been before she awoke. Turning around she saw josh, still motionless but breathing. She sat by him in silence for what seemed like hours. Only staring at the boy with the blue hair.
"Carolina, your shift is up." Another nurse sighed. Carolina hasn't noticed the sun rise, nor did she care. Slowly she got up and and left the room without a word.
