Part 9

Josh awoke to silence. He opened his eyes to a grey landscape. The hard concrete ground he lay on sent chills up his body. Snow hit his face and quickly melted.

He struggled frantically to recall when he had left the hospital. As he stood up a cold wind bit his back forcing him to turn. Standing behind his was a man, a toy, he smiled at Josh and made his way toward him, joints bending slowly for they were stained with rust.

"Where am I?" Josh asked when the toy finally approached him.

"Toyland." The toy said solemnly. "But you don't belong here"

Toyland? The place Josh had told Eleanor about while she slept?

"How can I get back?"

"You must find the princess, the queen has overthrown me and is taking over."

"Where do I find this princess?" Josh's head was spinning with confusion.

"We've lost porcelain." The toy man frowned. "She has the key that will open the door to your home and release the hearts stolen by the evil queen Carolina."

Porcelain? Josh's eyes grew wide, the name he had begun calling Eleanor. And Carolina, the nurse? "I will find her sir." He bowed down to the toy out of force. Without words Josh could tell this toy had authority.

"Thank you" the voice spoke but no toy was to be found where the man had stood.

Slowly josh looked around him. Forest surrounded him. Trees growing out of a concrete ground.

Closing his eyes he stuck his arm out and spun around. When he stopped he began to walk in the direction his arm pointed.

There was an eerie silence as he walked through the trees. Animals raced around him only to disappear as soon as they passed. Was he dead? He thought as he walked on. He shook off the thought and kept walking in search of porcelain or the queen.
