Three more weeks passed and now the pups are six weeks old. The age of exploring the outside world has come for the pups.
Shadow:
I stood out of the den entrance, I barked calling to my pups. They stood watching me from the entrance. I called to them again, Bandit eyed me curiouly. I sat watching him, Bandit was unsure of wheather to leave the den since the last time he'd been to young and was punished for leaving without permission. I called again and watched Bandit step out and trot toward me. Ginger and Cocoa hesitated, and soon walked out onto the grass after being nudged by Lightning. I licked them lovingly, they're out of the den I thought proudly. I led the pups out of the den and into the teritory around the den. I looked over my shoulder at the pups. They both walked behind me in a line, all gazing up at thier surroundings and sniffing at the new scents they were expiriencing. Their curiosity made me grin as I continued to walk around through the area.
We walked for a while and were closing in on the edge of the territory when I decided it was to dangerous to continue on. Around the border coyotes, foxes, and lone wolves would most likely be lingering around there. Bandit, Ginger and Cocoa seemed somewhat disapointed they would not continue on forward, yet glad we were going back to the den were they knew they would be warm and protected. "Fox" I thought as the scent reached my nose. I frowned as we walked. I trotted quicker, not wanting to be walking back to the den with two, one or no pups left.
We reached the den quicker and I hurried them in. They ran in and I stood at the entrance. I sniffed the air again picking up the scent. I began marking the area by rolling in the grass, pawing at the dirt and marking other plants. When I felt like the area around the den was good enough I left running toward the scent of fox.
When I saw the fox it was eating a squirrel, I was a good distance away. I took a step forward, accidentally brushing against a bush. The slight stir of leaves caused the fox to look up from its prey. It glared at me, and yipped its high barkish sound at me. I ran forward and sprang for its neck. It ducked low to the ground under me, turned and by a tuff of fur missed sinking its spear-sharp teeth into my leg. I bit its neck as hard as wolfly possible and killed it quickly. I ate as much as I could and ran back to the den.
Bandit:
I perked my ears up and sniffed the air, Shadow! I raced out the den to greet her, she licked me on the head and licked Ginger and Cocoa when they came running out behind me. I sniffed Shadow and licked her muzzle. She backed up and regurgitated a pile of softened meat. Ginger ran up beside me and we dug into the meat. Cocoa walked up and scarfed down the meat as well. When we finished Shadow walked back into the den. I yipped excited and raced up to Shadow. Ginger, Cocoa, and I jumped as high as we could. We managed to push Shadow down with our combined wieght. Shadow sat up and played with us for a while till we gave up on knocking her down. Even though we failed, I thought, it was fun.
Shadow:
A small smile creeped onto my face. Thier learning to fight by playing I thought. I felt the pride and happiness of a mother wolf when her pups were growing up well. I settled down farther back into the den. Cocoa layed beside me, Bandit and Ginger sat seperate on the left and right sides of the den. Lightning walked into the den, back from hunting goat. He licked my muzzle before settling down to sleep. The pups fell fast to sleep before I finally layed my head down to sleep as well.
When I woke up Lightning and the pups were gone from the den. I rose to my feet and stretched and yawned loudly. I left the den and stood just out of the entrance. I looked up to the cloudle sky, the clouds hard gone from a light grey to a darker grey I noticed. I wonder were the pups are I thought. I hoped they and Lightning would not be gone to long. They'll be back I thought more cherfully. I sniffed the air, the sweet scent of a squirrel reached my nose. I ran toward the scent, keeping my ears open for the pups. The squirrels scent grew stronger. I heard the rustle of leaves and bushes and the soft munching of a squirrel eating. The squirrel was hidden under the leaves, but I knew it was there. I took one paw step forward, another, and another as I drew closer. The squirrel sat up in alarm, had I made a sound, I thought? Its nose and ears twitched while I managed to hold perfectly still and quiet. The squirrel made a small nose of alarm before it jumped back. I made my move the instant it jumped to snap its neck. I missed and the squirrel raced up a tree out of sight, but not out of scent range. I jumped up against the tree growling. I could of had it! I thought to myself.
I ran back to the den and the pups were back with Lightning. I licked Lightning on the muzzled and was greeted by the pups with gentle play fightning. The mouthed on my paws and jumped at me and gently knawed on my legs. It was cute and silly, yet annoying and to pupish for me. I picked one by one of them by the scruff and placed them in the den. They squirmed when I picked them up, not pleased to still be treated like little pups, as if they were helpless. I sniffed the air, a cool breeze drifted across the land.
