"You're going to need to start conditioning training with Coach Lopez. If you can't make it through a match without getting winded...it's just not going to work. Alright. See you tomorrow"
I sat back with a groan and closed my eyes. There was so much on my mind. I was wondering how things were going back home. I couldn't help but worry about Sierra. She seemed less than thrilled about school and even less than thrilled to have to stay home with Jenn and the boys. At this point she seemed to only trust me and I hated the idea of leaving. But I was needed here too. There was too much to take care of and with the open tryout coming to a close all of us were really busy trying to make decisions. I ran my hand over my face and sighed deeply before getting lost in the mountain of paperwork on my desk.
"Hi stranger."
I glanced up from my file and sat back watching her from the doorway. It'd been years since we'd talked or even spent time in the same space. Our break up wasn't pretty and she hated Jenn for it. They hated each other. Definitely no love loss between them. And Jenn couldn't forget or let go...hope Jenn doesn't find out about this.
"Hey Renee. What are you doing here? I see you on ESPN from time to time. Good for you"
"Yeah. So look at you...never pictured you at a desk job."
"It's not. At least not entirely. It pays the bills"
"I heard they found your daughter. You must be excited."
"Mmmhmm" I nodded "She turned herself in. It's....well....it's different"
She walked over and stood next to my desk. I turned in my chair to face her and watched her. She hadn't changed much. Her hair was a little longer and a bit darker, but overall she looked the same.
"Still with Jennifer?"
"Yes. Still married to Jenn. And I'm happy. Whatever happened to that sportscaster boyfriend of yours"
"Weather man actually"
"Oh...sorry." I chuckled
"We broke up a while ago. Did you maybe want to go get coffee and catch up or something?"
"Uhh...no thanks. I need to finish up here and head back to the apartment so I can check up on my kids."
"Jon, do you ever wonder what would could've been if we hadn't broken up?"
"No, to be honest. I know things didn't end well with us, but without Jenn I wouldn't have my kids."
"You don't know that."
"You know Renee, I have a ton of paperwork to sort through before tomorrow. It was great seeing you"
She looked at me hurt, but I wasn't in the mood to discuss this for the billionth time. Clearly Jenn wasn't the only one who couldn't let go. I watched her walk out of the door as Colby passed by quickly and then walked backwards slowly poking his head in the door and making a face. I laughed and shook my head. He came in and plopped down on the chair in front of my desk staring at me. I was trying hard to ignore him, but I could feel his eyes on me. He was worse than a teenage girl looking for gossip. Colby loudly cleared his throat and stared at me waiting. I set my pen down and sat back crossing my arms across my chest with a sigh. We stared at each other for a while participating in this bizarre stalemate. He raised his eyebrows and crossed his leg while clearing his throat
"Fiiiine I'll bite...what Colby?"
"Renee huh??"
"Ugh" I groaned "Nothing happened. She popped in to say hi and try to relive the past."
