I see the name "Kevin" on the top of the screen. I slide it over. I press the call button to the right of the name.
'Maybe it's all these instagram posts and these damn hormones getting me all fired up for no reason.' I mutter softly.
"Hey love, I wasn't expecting you to call me tonight. I thought you were going to be with your wife."
I recognized the familiar male's voice but I couldn't put my finger on who it was.
"Um... who is this?" I say.
The person quickly hung up, afraid. Then calls me back.
"Wait a minute, is this Aleese?" he asks.
"Yes, why? I ask. "Oh my god. Is this kevin? MY COUSIN KEVIN?" I yell loudly, but covering my mouth after so Michael won't come out of the
bathroom thinking I'm in labor or something.
"Jesus Christ... I'll call you right back." he says.
I delete the call from the call log, and put the phone where it was. A few seconds later, I see the bathroom's door knob turn. He comes out smiling after brushing his teeth.
"Ahhh. I've been looking forward to this bed the whole day. You wouldn't believe it."
"Yeah, I wouldn't believe you like I shouldn't have months ago, right?" I yell.
"Aleese... what are you talking about?"
"You're playing me for my cousin? My MALE cousin, which I haven't seen since my mother's funeral? Are you serious? Please tell me it's a prank, Michael" I softly say as I cover my face so he wouldn't see the tears.
"It's not what it looks like, babe."
"Don't you dare lie to me. I've had enough of this."
I begin packing up my bags, filling it with clothes, shoes, hair products, and my toothbrush. As I start heading towards the front door downstairs, he taps my shoulder.
"One more thing. I was going to tell you today."
"Nothing could be worse than you becoming gay while married to me and having a baby on the way. So, spill it. What is it, Michael?"
"Remember my meeting last night?"
"Yeah, so?"
"I wasn't at a meeting. I was at the doctor's office. I took a test, and it came
back positive for HIV. I got it from your cousin."
I stared at him blankly. I was literally speechless. And that's barely ever, because I have a comment about everything. I grab my car keys laying next to a bouquet of roses in a vase I haven't seen on the counter. There's a little note on the bottom, taped to the vase.
"For the most beautiful woman that has made me the luckiest man to live. I love you. Love, Michael."
