Gazing at the woman in the form fitting white mermaid style dress with her ruby red hair pulled up neatly, I couldn’t believe it was my reflection. Turning to the side, I studied my profile intently. Keeping my eyes onto my stomach and just willing it to be a formable bump. It was happening, this baby thing, but not quite yet.
“You can’t tell,” Psyche said from the corner of the room. She sat in a light pink sundress with a bouquet in her hands. She beamed over as she set down the bouquet and picked up a veil. She came over to stand next to me with the thin fabric in her hands. “You look beautiful.”
I huffed at the cliché, but that girl in the mirror was certainly a sight to behold. Psyche let out a slow breath next to me, and I shot her a questioning glance.
“I just always pictured you to have a really big and grand wedding, you know?” Psyche mumbled with a sad tone. “I didn’t think it’d turn out like this.”
“No one did,” I replied with a sigh. “But, it’ll still be nice.”
“Oh, it’ll be lovely,” Psyche said waving the notion away. “I made sure of that.”
“Thanks, Grandma,” I muttered quietly. Psyche took the moment to add the veil to my head and pull one thin layer over my face.
“Eros likes to go traditional,” Psyche said in explanation. “He actually thought the dress shouldn’t be white, but well, I talked him out of that.” I rolled my eyes at the thought.
I walked away from the mirror and pushed the veil away from my face. Finding the nearest chair, I sat down to take a breath.
“Don’t tell me it’s cold feet, dear.” Psyche leisurely walked over to stand behind my chair.
“Of course not,” I replied with a laugh. “I have no doubt this is the right thing…but now?”
Psyche shrugged. “You can always wait.”
“I just wish my friends were here,” I mumbled thinking of Sean and Brooke. They couldn’t be here for multiple reasons. One of the biggest was that they had no idea about Olympus and wouldn’t be able to come up here. Another was that they were in California settling in to their new life. Nate and I had planned to tell them about our world, but we never found the time. There was no reason to burden them with that information now that they were leaving us. Of course, we talked on the phone to them at least once a day. Brooke and Sean had unknowingly signed up for a big clingy girlfriend when they met both Nate and I. We just couldn’t quite let them go.
“It’s best that they’re not,” Psyche said after a moment. She walked over to where she had left the flowers. “I mean, I know you want your friends here, but it’s better this way.”
“I know,” I agreed. “It doesn’t make it any easier.”
“Should we get going, dear?”
Flattening down the fabric in my lap, the bouquet in Psyche’s hands loomed over me. I grabbed them gently and held them in my lap. They were perfect roses, red roses, per Eros’s request. He had a lot of say in this wedding apparently. Something about symbols of love and things. My only requirement was the least amount of pink as possible. I knew with this family that there would be some, but I had to give Psyche some boundaries.
Standing, Psyche automatically adjusted my veil so it fit properly. She scurried over to the dressing room door and opened it. Eros was leaning against the wall outside, and he smiled upon seeing me.
“Absolutely perfect,” Eros said. I raised my eyebrows at him in question.
“Isn’t she?” Psyche mumbled with a dreamy sigh. “We waited for this day, Peyton. For so long, we just wanted to see you so happy. And soon you’ll have a family!”
