I woke up extremely early the next day. It was just 5 a.m., but Damon wasn’t next to me. That’s weird, I thought. I heard murmuring in the kitchen, so I ran downstairs to see if anyone else was awake.

To my horror, I found Damon strapped to a chair with his mouth strapped shut. He didn’t seem to be hurt…yet. It must have been the other vampires that we were concerned about. They must have known Louis. Where was everyone else though? Surely they hadn’t slept through the racket as I did…

Damon’s eyes were wet, but as soon as he saw me he shook his head violently. He told me with his eyes to get out of here, and I thought I heard him say something about our friends but it was all muffled. I had to be smart. As much as I wanted to run into the kitchen and get Damon out of there, I had to be smart.

I grabbed my phone and checked my messages. Just as I had suspected, there were multiple messages from Stefan and Matt sent only a few minutes ago, telling me to get to the cellar and not to go into the kitchen because it was extremely dangerous. I glanced at Damon once more, gesturing with my hand that I’d be back. He just smiled slightly.

I ran into the basement to find all my friends huddled around a little table discussing what to do next.

“Elena!” Bonnie ran to hug me, “It’s okay. We’ll get him out of there.”

“How many vampires are we dealing with?” I asked everyone.

“There are three that we saw, but we have no clue how many are actually around here. They’re after revenge. They didn’t take Louis’ death lightly at all. Not to mention the other two vampires we killed,” Stefan responded.

“Okay, so let me get Damon out. I’ll negotiate something,” I started walking back upstairs.

“Elena, wait!” Jeremy stopped me, “I don’t think there’s any room for negotiation left.”

“I have to try, Jeremy! I can’t let them continue hurting him. This was my fault. I won’t let them torture him anymore!” I sprinted back upstairs and straight into the kitchen. Damon’s eyes grew wide with horror when he saw me enter. The other vampires weren’t there, and they hadn’t hurt him yet. This was the perfect time to get him out.

I removed the tape from Damon’s mouth carefully, and he immediately warned me, “Elena, what are you doing?! If they come in here now, they’ll take you away from me. Get out of here!”

I was able to unstrap him from the chair and once he stood up, I placed my hand on his cheek and said, “I am not leaving you, Damon. It’s you and me forever, no matter what. Stefan and the others are in the cellar. I need you to go down there. I’m staying and negotiating something.”

“Like hell I’m leaving you here!” Damon whispered harshly.

“Damon, I’m begging you. Please go down there. They’ll be back any second and if they find us both free, they’ll kill us and we won’t have any chance. I’ll be okay,” I nodded reassuringly as Damon reluctantly let go of me and made his way to the basement.

Once I knew he was safely there, I confronted the vampires that had just re-entered the boarding house. There were three of them. They all had short hair and wore simple shirts with jeans. Nothing special.

I strode out of the kitchen and to the front door to make them aware of my presence.

“Well, well, well. If it isn’t Miss Elena Gilbert…” one of the vampires stated.

“What do you guys want?” I demanded.

“Revenge. What else? You and your Salvatore friends killed our pals, including Louis, so I think we have a right to be very angry.”
