chapter 11;

That evening back at camp, I could barely eat supper. I would lift a forkful of potatoes up to my mouth and then instantly put it back on my plate.

I wanted to visit dandy again, like I promised — but now Gloria was threatening me to see him and I wasn't comfortable with that. I was suddenly wishing I'd listened to Bette & Dot and Jimmy and stayed away from that gorgeous psycho right from the start.

"Diana?" I heard a voice say. "You know you're not going to get anywhere, by not eating! Trust me, I've know." I was awoken from my thoughts to see that all the other freaks had left the main tent and it was just me and Miss Maggie Esmerelda left, sitting at the long rectangular table together. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in and looked at Maggie who was frowning at me, nibbling on her lips, that were coated in red lipstick.

I hadn't spoken to Maggie much before. My only encounter with her was when Jimmy introduced me to everybody at my 'welcoming bbq'. She was a fortune teller and I'd never believed in the psychic / fortune teller crap plus I got a dodgy vibe from her so I purposely steered clear of her.

"I know," I whispered and stood up quickly. "But I'm not hungry-" suddenly I felt her grab my arm and she looked right at me, her facial expression crinkled with sudden rage with her blonde hair framing her angry face.

"Look! Stay away from Jimmy!" She spat. "I saw you hanging around with rich-kid money bags and I know he'll get into your head and next thing you'll know, you'll be trying to saw me in half too!" She let go of my arm leaving a burning red mark. My jaw dropped and I felt tears well up in my eyes. Suddenly, I kicked her shin and ran out of the tent.

I ran and ran and ran and ran. Tears spilling out of my eyes as I did so. I fled from the freak show and out into the dark forest that backed up to camp. And then I collapsed down onto the damp, cold, dirty ground.
