Naomi and Robbie
(Somewhere, Tennessee)
"Ow!" I hiss as Robbie applies a cold towel to my face, he's trying to keep a straight face, because he and I are both sure half of my face will look like a panda by tomorrow. Man she got me good. I glance across the room at the girl, no sorry woman who just beat my ass. I like to think I got a good kick in but everyone knows I lost, big time. This lady has some deep problems that I don't know about, yes, maybe I shouldn't have 'criticized' her tattoo, but seriously how was I supposed to know 'sweet serendipity' actually meant something. She probably hates me even more now, if possible. "You should probably go and apologize to her" Robbie says, reading my mind. "I know..." I trail off, looking across the room at her, "help me stand up" I ask Robbie. "What, she hit you that hard?" he jokes, I look at him like wrong time, Robbie. He pulls me to my feet, kissing my eye, and I wince. I slowly make myself over to her, who is being embraced by David. He looks like he's whispering something in her ear, her eyes are closed. I guess I really hit it close to home. I stop in front of her, waiting for her to turn her attention to me. She finally looks up at me, I can't tell if it's hatred or disdain in her eyes. No, wait. It's hatred. How do I even start an apology like that? I'm sorry I'm a bitch? I don't think before I speak sometimes? I go with the first one. "I'm sorry I'm a bitch," I start when I see her do her famous eyebrow raise. "I shouldn't have said that before, about your tattoo I mean," I clarify. "Uhhh, I hope you don't kill me in my sleep, and while I'm at it, sorry I tried to steal your van." I finish. That was probably the worst apology in the history of apologies. I look at her, waiting for her response. "Su disculpa no significa nada si no es sincera" Your apology means nothing if it's not sincere. I stare at her for a moment. Breathe Naomi, just breathe. "You want sincere? Well I can't give it to you, you are obviously upset about something, let me guess, nobody's allowed to mention it, whatever it is, you're having everyone walk on eggshells around you. When someone mentions whatever, you go crazy, burst into tears. Well, I've got news for you, this is the wrong time to get emotional. So no, I don't have an apology for you, except, I'm sorry I didn't know I wasn't supposed to mention whoever died." I glance towards Robbie, to see him shaking his head with his head in his hands. That probably made it worse. "Listen princess , I can assume you have such a badass attitude because you managed to survive, but I do not want to hear anything from you until you have to do the one thing you never wanted to do to someone you love from the deepest part of your soul, I shot my sister because she got bit, my baby sister ,do you know how much that hurts ? So you know what congratulations you're a fucking psychoanalyst. Her name was Serendipity and she didn't live to see her 17th birthday so yeah you right so take your half assed apology and shove it up your ass" Lexington finishes, she looks sad and furious. Well, the 'being a dick award' goes to me. "Wow..." I say finally after standing in front of her for a few minutes, with a loss for words. I clear my throat before continuing, "I really am sorry, I didn't know..." I let it trail off, since I don't really know how to end apologies without ranting on and on. She just sighs muttering "whatever" and flipping the folder, lying on the bed next to her, open. "My dad kept this folder hidden when he left us. It talks about the virus and I think there is a CDC in new york look at this address" We all crowd around her and the folder, it shows an aerial view of Manhattan and it just looks like a cluster of buildings but one building in particular is circled. "So you're planning on going to New York, to find out what the virus is?" I ask them, she looks up at me for a moment, and I think she wants to beat me up again, before she nods, looking back at the folder in front of her. "We heard about the evacuation in New York, it's the last one." I look at her to see if she heard me, she just nods again. "We should get some rest," I hear someone say from behind me, and look to see that it's Noah, "we can deal with the rest later," he adds on, and leaves the room. Robbie pulls on my hand, to tug me out of Lexington;s room. but I still feel bad about the whole insulted-the-memory-of-her-sister-thing, with one last glance at her still keeping her head down, I leave the room with Robbie. "You really need to work on your social skills, Nae" Robbie says once we're back in our room. I nod, "I'm gonna have a black eye," I say more to myself than to him, while I collapse on the bed. I hear Robbie walk up to the bed, crouching in front of me, and start taking off my shoes for me. Robbie chuckles saying, "I can't get over the fact that you got punched in the face." "You're really not helping Robbie," I tell him, as I see him come into view as he holds himself over me. "Daw, I'll kiss it," he leans down to kiss it again, and I wince, "don't, it hurts." That somehow does him in, and Robbie just starts laughing uncontrollably, doubling over, holding his stomach. Me scowling at him does not deter him, he just keeps on laughing. "You are an ass, Robbie" I say, starting to laugh as well. Robbie kisses me on the cheek, before wrapping his arms around my waist, and resting his head on my chest. That's the last thing I remember before falling asleep, both of us chuckling into the night.
