Naomi and Robbie
(Somewhere, Kentucky)
We have just crossed the border into Kentucky, we've only been driving about an hour, so I'm happy, kind of. I glance at the back of Robbie's head, who is driving the bus right now. all the windows are open and I glance behind me to the back of the bus , where the queen and her boyfriend are sitting she is leaning her head back and her hair's flying in all directions , and David is staring at her in reverence , when she glances at him he kisses her then whispers something in her ear to which she giggles and I have to look away. As I glance around I catch Noah's eyes and his face slowly melts into a smile like a Cheshire cat, my breath hitches, before I smile back at him, I catch myself and turn back in my seat, and pretend to inspect my fingernails, only two of my fingers still has green nail polish on it, I scratch it off like I did my other fingernails. So what? Noah is cute. His hair out today, pin straight and thick, and hangs down his shoulders. He's started growing a little stubble beard since the last time I saw him in Denver, he looks...scruffy now. Hot. He's wearing a thin t-shirt, red, it stretches across his washboard abs, and accentuates his toned arms and nice shoulders. I can feel him and see him looking at me out of the corner of my eye. He gets up, and walks towards the front of the bus, where I'm sitting, in the sixth row. He plops down next to me, turning to me, one hand on the back of our seat, the other on the seat in front of us. I look at him warily, wondering what he's going to do next. He makes me nervous. I lick my lips, and see his eyes glance at them briefly, before coming back up to my eyes. I feel the heat of blush creeping up my neck, and to my ears, and silently pray that it's not noticeable. His hand moves down to his pocket jeans, and I glance at him quickly before I follow his hand movement. What is he up to? He fishes around in his pocket before taking out his...Ipod? And earphones? He puts one in his ear, turning the Ipod on, looking at me, he says "wanna listen?" I just nod, completely dumbfounded. He leans in, to try and put the earphones in my ear, but I pull back at the last minute. "I can do it myself," I say quietly, glancing at him, greeted with an unreadable face. I fumble for the earphones, taking it and plugging it in my ear, instantly greeted with Beyonce's voice "...we be all night, last thing I remember is our beautiful bodies, grinding up in that club" I hear Noah cough, switching to the next song. A woman's voice fills my ear, singing in a foreign language, soft and sweet. A piano plays in the background. We sit in silence now, I feel Noah's arm, now resting behind my head, giving off heat. I look out the window, at the passing cornfields, and a few infested, staring at us as we pass them, probably the infested that can't walk or run as easily as the others. They just stand still, eerily quiet as they wait for someone or something to approach them. "Sad, isn't it? " I hear Noah say, I turn to look at him. "Just a month ago, we all had different lives, doing whatever we wanted, living our lives, not driven by fear, and now? Probably half of the population is gone, turned into one of those things, or just dead." His eyebrows furrows as he remembers something before he glances at me, clears his throat and smiles, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Did you lose someone, too?" I ask before I can stop myself. "Didn't all of us lose someone?" he counters, I feel for my phone, in my hoodie pocket, I charged it this morning before we left. "My sisters, twins, I had to go pick them up from kindergarten, because none of the children were feeling good. They were supposed to be on a field trip, and not supposed to be back until 5pm, I was hanging out with my friends, when I got the call. I went to pick them up, brought them home, made them their favourite soup and sent them to bed." Noah closes his eyes for a minute, and I almost stop him from telling me, but he opens them again to continue. "Around 9pm, Yoona, one of the twins comes out the room, crying, scratching at her face. Her hands were bloody underneath her fingernails. I freaked out, started calling my parents, then took her into the bathroom. She wouldn't stop scratching her face, she kept screaming, she was so loud. I tried to wipe off her face with a washcloth, there was so much blood. It started coming out of her nose as well. My hands were shaking so much when I finally called for the ambulance, my parents were taking too long. The ambulance said they would be there as soon as possible, and told me to try and stop the bleeding and to get her to stop scratching herself. Soon Sunny, my other sister, joined us in the bathroom, scratching her face as well, just not as hard as Yoona. I held Yoona's hand together so she could stop hurting herself. After a few minutes she stopped, I wiped the blood of her face, it hurt me so much to see her wincing. Just as I saw the ambulance pull into our driveway, both Yoona and Sunny start coughing up blood, convulsing on the bathroom floor. The paramedics pushed past me, in time to see both Sunny and Yoona go completely still. I kept screaming at them to do their job, and save my sisters. But they were already gone. They couldn't do anything. I kind of lost it then, my parents arrived and saw me beating the hell out of one of the paramedics. I could still remember my mother screaming and crying on the floor, cradling her babies in her arms. It took two paramedics and my father to pull me off of him." Noah looks over to me, alarm on his face, as he starts to dab away the tears I didn't even notice. "Hey...hey" he says chuckling, his thumb running over my cheek, to wipe away the last stray tear. "How can you laugh and smile all the time?" I ask him, confused at how he always has such a light mood. "How can you?" he asks me, looking intently at me, at this moment I notice how close his face is to mine, or how my hands are resting on his chest, and I can't decide if they're there to push him away, or seconds from fisting themselves into his t-shirt, to pull him towards me. Noah seems to notice too, he glances at my lips again, licking his own, before his gaze runs over my face. His hand starts to come up, to caress my cheek. You have a BOYFRIEND, Naomi! You have been together for two years. TWO YEARS! You're going to throw it away for Mister Asian over here? "I have a boyfriend" I whisper, and Noah stops and looks at me. A honk sounds from behind us. Hunter. Before Noah can say anything else, he just gets up to go look out the back of the bus, I glance towards the front to see Robbie looking at me, he shakes his head, bringing the bus to a stop. Great, Naomi. Good job. The queen disentangles herself from David's arms, walking to the back of the bus, and jumping out. Hunter is already out of the pumpkin van, leaning against it, gun in hand, with a girl next to him. David and Noah get up as well, spotting the girl. Robbie gets up as well, brushing past me. "Robbie" I try, calling out to him. "Not now, Nae" he calls over his shoulder, jumping out of the back of the bus. Well, I blew it. I jump out after him, bat in hand. "Who's this?" Queenie asks the question we've been wondering, pointing her gun at the girl. Hunter goes to stand in front of her, blocking Queenie's view of the other girl. She's short, maybe 5'4 with a wavy light brown bob, stopping just under her chin. She's wearing a blouse, that accentuated her large bosom, with a deep cleavage and shorty shorts, with cowboy boots. She eyed us from behind Hunter. Well I can see why he stopped. "Mary," Hunter answers for the girl, "she needs a lift to New York, and that's where we are heading." Queenie raises her famous eyebrow, "oh, you now decide to grow a pair, and make decisions?" Hunter rolls his eyes, Queenie decides to ignore that, "What can you contribute to the group?" she asks the girl now, directly. Mary steps from behind Hunter, looking at us wearily. "Umm I can cook," she has a soft voice, with a slight twang. "She also made a few bombs herself," Hunter adds, smiling down at her, Mary blushes a deep red, spreading to her neck and chest area. I look around to see if anyone is ogling her chest, besides Hunter. Robbie still has his gun pointed at Mary, his eyes trained on her face. Good boy. I look over to Noah to find him staring directly at me. I avert my eyes right away, feeling my face heat up. Queenie looks at Mary for a few minutes, not lowering her gun once, before she justs shrugs, and walks back towards the bus. She does a lot of those silent walkaways. Very dramatic.
