They walked back into the bunker once they were back when Dean spoke up. "Avery, can I talk to you?" Sam was about to object and talk to Dean when she cut him off.
"Sure." She put her bags down in her room and stepped outside with Dean. "Dean, before you say anything, I'm so-"
"Don't apologize. I'm not mad." He cut her off.
"But you heard all of what I was telling Sam." She didn't get why he wasn't mad.
"Yes, but I knew you weren't being mean. I wanted to talk to you for two reasons. One is to tell you what I thought about what you said, and the other is to make sure you're ok. So, about what you said... I'm not mad. I totally get what you're saying and I don't want you and Sam to end up like Jen and I either. I don't want to see either of you get hurt like she and I both were. If only just from that phone call, I know you and Sam will be fine and you don't need to worry about your relationship failing."
"Why didn't you respond to my text, Dean? You scared the heck out of me. I thought you were so pissed. I was actually going to have Sam talk to you if you didn't bring it up because I didn't want to have hurt you." She asked. He scared her so much.
"I wanted to talk in person. I guess I should have texted you that I wanted to talk later. Sorry for scaring you. Now onto my other point. Are you ok?" He asked. He had a deep concern present in his voice.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"Once Jen and I got serious, and now ever since she left, you've seemed upset. You seem so worried about me, you get upset extra easily, you feel bad about every little thing, you've been having trouble dealing with things. This isn't meant to be mean, but it's like you're regressing back to how you were emotionally when you were first dating Sam. I don't know why you are and I don't know if you even know why, but I'm worried about you. Sam is too." He explained with gentle conviction.
"I don't totally know why either. I guess partly because I saw how happy you were with Jen. You were beaming constantly. It didn't last. I'm worried about Sam and I so that's partly been to blame. I have had some trouble dealing with things because there's so many relationships to balance. I'm trying to keep Sam happy, and help you, and be a mom to Audrey while not neglecting Tristan. Another aspect to being worried about Sam is that Jen was a lot like me. She went through so much in the past and I kind of feel like that was partly why she was so unreasonable about things. I'm scared I'm the same way. There's more reasons I'm sure, but I'm not sure what they are."
"It's ok that you don't know. That all makes sense. Just try to realize that you and Sam are way better off than Jen and I ever were. You guys will be together forever. I'm sure of it. And I know it's hard to balance the relationships. It's hard for me too. But you don't have to worry so much about me. I'll be ok. Thanks for helping me so much though. And you are not unreasonable. You dealt with a lot but we're here to help you through anything."
"Thanks. I'm always gonna care though. If you seem upset, I'm always gonna be here for you. You hide how you feel from Sam, but you can't hide it from me no matter how hard you try. And don't worry, I didn't tell Sam about what you said about being reckless and all that stuff we talked about." She added.
"I appreciate that." He replied before they headed back inside.
"He's not mad, Sam." She stated. Sam nodded in relief. Avery went into Tristan's room and greeted the kids who were playing with Legos.
"Mommy! You're back!" Audrey stated joyfully. Audrey wrapped her in a hug.
"That's right Honey. See, I told you I'd be back." Avery replied.
"Yeah. I'm glad you're back. Are you ok?" She asked, picking up on my slightly puffy eyes that I had acquired from talking to Sam and Dean.
"Yeah. I'm ok. Let's all hang out for the rest of the evening, ok? I missed you kiddo." They all sat around and watched tv. Suddenly, Avery's phone rang. She took it to the other room.
"Hello?"
"Avery, it's Lucy."
"Hey! Why are you calling me after so many years?"
"I thought about you and I just hadn't talked to you in forever."
"Well it's good to hear from you. You have no idea how much I miss being at college and being with you."
"So what's new with you? How are you?"
"Wow. Um, where do I begin?" Avery chuckled nervously. "Well, I married Sam a while ago, he and I have a son named Tristan. He's 11. We live with Dean. He just found out he has a daughter with a girl he used to be with. We all live together. It's nice."
"That's great!"
"How are you?"
"I'm ok. That guy I was with broke up with me. I've found a couple guys since, but no one permanent. I finished up college a while back but still can't find much of a job. Your life seems to be perfect though. I'm happy for you. I miss you like crazy though. When are you coming back so I can meet this little son and niece of yours?"
"Lucy, I can't come back. It's just.... complicated. I just can't."
"Why? You're my friend."
"I said it's complicated. It has to do with their jobs and stuff like that. I can't explain it. I just can't come back."
"I just don't get why. Ok. If you can't come back, can you at least tell me that you're ok? You're not getting hurt or anything by either of them?"
"Yes. I'm fine. Sam has been absolutely wonderful. He's the greatest husband anyone could ask for. Dean's been amazing as well. He's been there for me for everything too and is literally like a brother to me. Tristan is such a sweetie, and Audrey is such a cute little kid and considers me her mommy too."
"Good. I'm just glad you're happy. I'll leave you alone."
"It's not that you need to leave me alone, just... Can you hold on one sec? Sam!" She hollered. Sam came running in. "Lucy called. How do I explain why I can't come back?" She asked. Sam took the phone.
"Lucy, it's Sam. The reason she can't go back is because we work for the FBI and it's a dangerous section. There's people who want revenge and things we are after. Trouble follows everywhere we go. It just goes with the job I guess. Going anywhere near you would put you in danger. It's hard enough keeping the kids out of danger. She just cares about you." Sam lied smoothly.
"Ok. I understand. Just tell her I miss her. That's all I had to say."
"I will. Bye." Sam replied. "She told me to tell you she understands and misses you then hung up."
"Ok. Thanks for explaining."
"Of course. Come on, let's go watch some more TV before we head to bed." She nodded and followed him out, surprised he didn't ask if she was ok because she really wasn't.
