Chapter one; Digging too Deep: Part one.
The increasingly annoying screech of an alarm was the morning’s first “hello,” to the woman laying atop her queen sized mattress. Her sheets were all gathered to one side of her bed while all her pillows were strewn across the floor. She let out an odd noise, close to a whimper, and then slammed her hand on the vexatious contraption’s ‘SNOOZE’ button. The alarm read five thirty, in big and bold red letters. The birds chirping an unidentified melody outside her window indicated it was, indeed, morning time.
Eventually, she gave into to the alarm’s continuous pestering. She hoisted herself off of her disheveled mattress, and then walked to the bathroom connected to her room, to begin her daily routine.
After a few strokes of her mascara and a flurry of blush across her high cheekbones, she went to leave her apartment. She walked out the door, locked it, and walked down the long dingy hallway until she reached the stairs and elevators at the very end.
As she made her way down the streets, she noted how crowded they always were. The
car drivers would wait quite a long time before they got a chance to move any significant distance. They had to wait for pedestrians to pass and street lights to turn green again. She never completely understood why they didn’t just take the train, to save them time, not to mention money. Gas was an expensive luxury. She scoffed at their ignorance, and then made her way to the stairs leading down into the MARTA station. She glanced at the train schedule, and grinned as wide as the Cheshire cat when she noticed how impeccable her timing was this morning. She had ten minutes to spare, which was incredibly unusual for her.
She reached her train’s boarding doors and clambered aboard. She pushed her way through a handful of people, until she finally made herself a spot to stand.
“Have my seat.”
She turned her head to the attractively, breath-taking man motioning for her to sit. He looked close to flawless, with his tanned skin and big brown eyes. She could see his obviously chiseled chest through his tight t-shirt. His hair reminded her of the fall, with all the warm and natural colors weaving throughout his beautiful hair.
A blush crept to her cheeks when she realized he had caught her relentlessly staring. She fumbled over her words until she finally stuttered out, “Wow… um, thanks.” She then sat down and stared at her toes.
The extraordinarily kind man had stared at her for the entire ride until her stop. She was both flattered and freaked out. As she stood up to leave, the man grabbed her arm and spun her around.
“Have we met before, today?” he stared accusingly, deep into her bewildered eyes.
“Doubtful.” She looked down at his arm and he removed it. She was incredibly confused.
The woman shimmied out before the door closed. She stared as the doors closed behind her and it sped away.
“People these days.” she humphed aloud.
She jogged up MARTA's exit stairs and shivered when she met up again with the wintry November air.
She was all bundled up in a white jacket, with a matching hat and gloves. She wore a deeply colored blue scarf around her neck. She tugged at the itchy scarf attempting to stop the awful fabric from rubbing against her neck. She wrapped her arms around her chest trying to create a little more warmth, and picked up her pace.
Down the street on the left, she ran into her warm haven, Starbucks. She ordered her normal fervid cup of coffee. She sneered as the lanky cashier announced her five dollar total. She took a sip of her coffee and then left.
She nearly ran across the street, to a prominent building almost completely covered in tinted windows. She walked up to two large glass doors, which slid open as she approached them. She walked through and looked at all the people, who were rushing around trying to get multiple things doneat once. She smiled as and old woman who sat behind a little computer desk smiled and greeted her. Sticky notes covered the computer.
“Margret wants all reporters to pick up their prompts, Miss Isobel.” The sweet old lady informed her as she walked away.
“Thanks Linda.” Isobel said over her shoulder.
Isobel took a sip of her coffee, and hurried to catch the next elevator.
“Izzy! Thank the heavens you are finally here! The boss has chewed out like twenty people by now.” An incredibly over dramatic and feminine voice belted out.
Isobel smiled at him who was rushing to her side. He looped his arm through hers and began to chatter aimlessly about some of the employees.
“Hey Dillion. I need to pick up my next writing topic this morning and start my rough draft. Maybe if I finish she will let me leave early, but in order to do that some people need to stop gossiping so much.” she glared accusingly at the Dillion.
“Ugh! Whatever,” he began walking in the other direction, but called over his shoulder, “You know you love it Izzy!”
She rolled her eyes and let out a laugh. She then headed to the Boss’ office for her latest writing prompt.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
“Come in!” a woman’s voice rang from behind the distorted glass of the door.
Isobel turned the knob and walked into the very posh and proper office. “Morning, Margret. I’m here for the prompt?” she asked it, rather than making a statement
“I know. So, people usually have someone to spend the holiday seasons with. However, a lot of people have to watch on the sidelines as happy couples enjoy themselves. I want you to write about love, give your opinion. It will be anonymous so sprinkle in some exaggerated stories.” Margret speedly said that her words almost tumbled over one another.
“That is ridiculous! I’m not even on that column category. That’s just ridiculo…”
“No. What is ridiculous is how fast I can have you replaced.” Margret sneered while she organized a stack of papers on her desk.
