It was the day. The day of the try out. Let's just say that I was getting nervous. I was actually getting a little excited about it, I kinda like the idea of being in such a great band. But I never told my mom or Miss Jankins that. I did tell my dad about it though. We have a great bond and I tell him Everything.
We pulled up to the high school.
"You ready?" my mom asked as she parked the car.
"Yeah." I said as I got out of the car and grab my clarinet case that was at my feet.
"So we are a little early but he said in the email that you could warm up before your try out." My mom said as we walked into the school. We went through the doors and into this big open hall that led to what looked like a cafeteria. We walk into this office that was to the right of where we walked in. We check in and got name tags so people know that we are supposed to be in the school.
My mom used to work at the school so she knows where the band room is, we didn't need someone to take us there.
We walked through the cafeteria and down a few halls until we came to a small hallway with two doors; one to the band room, and one to the choir room.
The band room was pretty big. In the back of the room there were some drums and other percussion equipment. Just to the right of the door there were three stacks of chairs and next the chairs were stand racks. There were also lockers all along the sides of the room.
My mom went into a room that I assumed was an office because there was a desk. There was a man sitting behind the desk; I assumed he was Mr. Jamison, the band director. I walked into the office and stood kinda behind, kinda beside my mom.
"This must be Cleo." Mr. Jamison said as he stood up and shook my hand. "I've heard a lot about you from Miss Jankins. She speaks very highly of you. I'm very excited to hear you." He said with a sweet smile which put me at ease a little bit. "So I have one other people that are trying out before you and they will start in about five minuets, so if you would like, I can open up a practice room for you and you can warm up."
"That would be nice." I said.
"Ok then. Right this way." He said as he walked around the desk and out the door. I followed him out of the band room and into the hallway we walked through to get to the band room. He walked up to a door and unlocked it.
"Here you go. You can warm up for about twenty minutes at the most then it will be about time for you to try out. You will go second." He said as he walked to the door. "Oh, and don't blow your chops before you try out." He said with a smile as he walked back to the band room.
"Ok honey, do you want me to stand in here and listen to you or do you want me to stand in the band room?" My mom asked me as she walked in to the practice room.
"I want you to stand in the band room, please." I said as I sat down and put my clarinet together.
"Ok. If you need me I'll be in the band room." She said as she walked out of the room and closed the door behind her.
I warmed up for about ten minutes. after I felt warmed up I walked out of the practice room and into the band room just in time to see the first person that tried out. Mr. Jamison looked around the room for me and when he saw me he gestures for me to come in the office.
It was my turn and I started to freak out.
I walked into the office and sat on a chair that was sitting in front of the desk. I put my music on the stand that sat in front of me. Mr. Jamison sat behind his desk.
"Ok, so first I want to hear the B flat scale, please." he said as he sat behind his desk.
I played the scale from memory.
"Very good." He said very impressed. "Now play the solo please." He said getting kind of excited to hear how it sounds.
I played it. I messed up once or twice but it was good.
"Very good." He said even more impressed then before. "Now, if you would please play a chromatic scale starting on F."
I played it with out messing up once.
"That was very good, Cleo. I'm very impressed with how you played. I will send you an email on Monday about whether you got in or not, Ok?" He asked.
"That will be fine."
"Ok, that's all I need from you." He said with a smile as he got out of his chair, walked around the desk, and opened the door for me.
"Thank you." I said as I walked out the door.
"How'd you do?" My mom asked excitedly as I walked up to her.
"I think I did good." I said as I put my clarinet back in its case.
"When will you figure out if you get in or not?" My mom asked as we walked back to the front office.
"Monday." I said as I walked into the office to check out.
Today was Friday so I had to wait for three days to hear whether I got in or not. I have to admit, I really wanted in that band.---
