Best and worst night

Hermione POV

Hermione stormed into the girls' tower, threw herself on her bed, and loudly announced to her fellow Gryffindors, "This has been the best and worst night of my life."

"Worst!" Lavender gasped.

"You went with VICTOR KRUM!" Pavarti added. "How could it be the worst?"

"I know, but - Ron Weasley likes me, and it turned him into a jealous prat! He ruined the entire evening!"

"Ooh," Pavarti said, suddenly understanding. "Yes, Padma was pretty annoyed with him too. . . ." The conversation quickly turned to each girl complaining or raving about their dates for the dance. "Who knew Harry Potter didn't know how to dance?"

"Who knew that Neville Longbottom could! Well, sort of, anyway."

"Who knew that Seamus had the ability to fart on command?"

Finally, around midnight, the conversation finally wound down. The girls said their goodnights and headed for bed. Lavender had a thought as she climbed in. "Hermione?"

"Yes Lavender?" Hermione asked, preparing to get in.

"I was wondering - what made this the best night of your life?"

A small smile crept across Hermione's face.

"Ron Weasley likes me."

Ron POV

"This has been the best and worst night of my life," Ron moaned as they entered the boys' tower.

"I know," Harry nodded. "Not the best night for me either. It was murder watching Cho with Cedric."

"Yeah. And that fight with Hermione! I know she likes me, but did she have to get that defensive about Krum! I mean, she should be supporting you!"

"Things will be better tomorrow," Harry said, crossing his fingers behind his back. He really hated it when Ron and Hermione argued. Things were just so much more fun when they were all on speaking terms.

They amused themselves for a while by complaining about the dance with the other boys (except for Neville, who insisted he had had a great time), then prepared for bed. Harry had a thought as he threw back the covers. "Hey, Ron?" Ron looked over. "What made this the best night of your life?"

A ghost of a smile appeared on Ron's face.

"Hermione Granger likes me."
