It's funny how at one time you and your best friend are so close, but suddenly, you can't even talk to them without awkwardness.

I never believed this, it never seemed possible to happen to Lidia and I. We were to close for that to happen, even though other people have warned me about it happening. That would never happen to us...

so I thought.

I was walking home from school. I didn't have a car, and I didn't necessarily want to ride the bus. Besides, I only live about ten minutes away from my school.

As I finally walked up the porch and through the doorway, I heard my mom greet me, "Hello Talia, how was school?"

"Extremely Educational." My mom laughed.

"Well, that's a good thing."

"Yeah I guess so."

"I was just fixing to make dinner, what would you like Talia? Hamburgers or Spaghetti?"

"Hamburgers please!"

"Okay, while I cool the burgers, go upstairs and work on your homework?"

"Okay mom."

I walked upstairs and entered my room, setting my backpack down on the bed next to me. I could smell the meat my mother was cooking down in the kitchen. I really wanted to eat it now! Ever since I was little, I've loved meat like it was air. My mom hates meat, she only cooks it for me. She's a vegetarian.

I don't know what my dad likes, he took off when I was little. Mom walked into his room and saw hair, blood, and paw prints everywhere. He was presumed dead. This happened when I was seven, that was eight years ago. I thought a wild animal got in and killed him, but I guess I'll never know for sure.

I pulled out my social studies binder and pulled out my notes on the Western and Eastern Roman Empire. I'd always enjoyed history, and this was the only homework I had since it was a Friday.

I was half way through when my phone rang. "Hello?"

"Hey!"

"Oh, hi Lidia, how are you?"

"I'm amazing, as usual. Are you excited about tomorrow?!"

"Absolutely!"

"I can't believe you're turning 16 tomorrow! The party is going to be awesome!"

"I know right. I'll talk to you tomorrow okay Lidia? I have some homework I haven't finished."

"Okay, bye!"

"Bye!"

I hung up and continued working. I had finished in the next ten minutes or so and checked the time.

6:42pm

Mom and I usually eat dinner at 6:45pm so I headed downstairs. I saw mom putting my burger on a plate and she had made herself a salad.

I dug in. This is amazing! I finished my burger and prepared myself for bed while mom continued to silently eat her salad in silence. I put my stuff in my backpack and I got into bed, already wishing it were my birthday.
