Remembering Him

14.

I feel Max lay beside me and gently wrap his arms around me.
A smile spreads across my face and I look at him over my shoulder.
"Hey, Max." I say softly.
"Hey- sorry, I didn't mean to wake you," Max says and gently kisses the back of my neck. 
I smile a bit and turn towards him. "I woke up about five minutes ago.." I lie. "Don't feel too bad about it." I say softly and kiss his jaw gently.
Max gently cups my cheek and lifts my head then kisses me.
I smile a bit as he pulls away and I lay my head on a pillow.
"Goodnight, Max." I whisper and close my eyes.
"Night, Cass." Max replies softly and a few moments later I fall asleep.

I wake up and stretch my legs and arms out then get up and walk out of the bathroom.
I smell pancakes and walk to the kitchen, seeing Ross flip a pancake that lands on the floor.
I laugh a bit and Max turns around. "Morning," he says and walks over to me, kissing my forehead gently.
I smile a bit and step up on his toes, hugging him back.
He waddles me into the front room and I laugh a bit.
"Cass?"
"Hm?"
"Can you go get dressed? I want to take you somewhere today." Max says softly.
I nod and step off of his feet.
"Be right back," I say and turn then leave and quickly go change into a simple but cute outfit. (Pic above)
After about fifteen minutes, I quickly return, knocking on the door.
The muffled conversations inside go quiet and a few seconds later the door opens, revealing Max, dressed in what he's going to wear for the day.
"You ready to go?" He asks, smiling.
"Yeah," I reply.
"Alright, let's go," he says and smiles, walks by me and walks towards the elevator.

We finally reach our destination. In a grass field, an apple tree, and a pond.
I get out and walk with Max to the tree. We both sit down, leaning on the tree.
I lean into Max a bit, smiling.
I see two mallard ducks, a male and a female swimming around the pond. Cattails (for those who don't know what those are.. They look like really long grasses with sausages on the ends.) lining some of the edges of the pond.
I stare at the sparrow that flies over the pond, skimming the water, catching bugs.
I look up at Max and smile then look at the tree. Birds are chirping, a squirrel running along the branches.
The sky is almost completely clear. Spotted with a few clouds.
"Cass?"
My eyes snap to Max and he stands up. I do the same and he starts to fidget a bit.
"Cass.. I don't know where to start. I love you. So much. Way more than you'll ever imagine. We've been through so much together.. I remember the day we met like it was yesterday. I remember the day you were hit by that car. The day you went into your coma. The day you went into chemo. And surgery. The day you forgot me. And you remembered me.. On your birthday. I have no better way to say this than.. Cass, you're not only my best friend. You're my girlfriend. And I want you to be so much more.. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Cass. So.." He gets down on one knee and pulls out a little box, revealing a little ring. "Cassandra Rose, will you make me the happiest man on earth.. And not only be my girlfriend.. But my fiancé?" He asks.
I smile. Tears forming in my eyes. It's a lot more emotional to hear it straight to you than practiced.
I nod slowly. He smiles and stands up then slips the promise ring onto my finger.
Stray tears begin to run down my cheeks and I hug Max. "I love you.. So fucking much." I say softly.
"I love you too. More than you know." Max says and hugs me back, gently rocking me back and forth.

I walk into the apartment. I've decided to tell my mom and brother.
"Mom? Jackson?" I call.
"Yeah?" Jackson calls and comes out.
I keep my hands behind my back. "Mom can you come out here?" I call again.
"Yeah," she calls back and walks into the living room.
I walk in front of the couch. "Can you guys sit down?" I ask.
Jackson gives me a look then walks t the couch and sits down, as does my mom.
"What happened?"
A smile appears on my face. And I show them my hand. The one with the ring on it.
"A ring?" Jackson asks, raising his eyebrows.
Mom looks shocked. Happy. Surprised.
"Not just a ring, Jackson. It's a promise ring.. Max proposed to me." I say, smiling. My cheeks raising slightly.
Jackson looks at me like really, before graduation?
"Oh my god congratulations!" Mom says and gets up then hugs me.
I smile and hug her back.
"When's the reception?" She asks.
"Sometime during the summer. After I graduate." I say, smiling a bit.
