As I stared at myself in the mirror, I grinned. I finally felt pretty. Back at home- I couldn't continue the thought.
I wore the black and blue dress I had bought when we went shopping. Lilly had done my makeup, and I had mascara, eyeliner, a pink gloss, and eye shadow. My brown locks were wavy and had a bit of one side pinned up. My blue converse were the only normal things about what I wore.
I knocked on Hazel's door and when she opened it, she gasped at my appearance.
"Wow, Grace! You actually look like a girl!" She exclaims.
"I know. It's dreadful." I mutter. "Lets go downstairs. Lilly said all the boys are downstairs waiting."
We walk downstairs together and pause at the longer step.
"Ready?" Hazel asks.
"Ready." We turn to the next step and find all the boys and Lilly staring at us. I'm still not used to being the center of attention but Hazel obviously was, because she grinned and waved at them before confidently walking down the last of the steps, leaving me there in front of the boys to be ogled.
"Traitor!" I call at her. She shrugs and steps into the sea of boys.
Good, at least half of their attention will be diverted from me.
I self-consciously walk down the remaining stairs and am immediately engulfed by boys.
"Check her shoes!" One of them says to the rest. They all glance down at my converse then smile at me.
"At least one of you is normal." Says Logan.
"Where's your date then?" I ask him.
"Coming." He smirks.
I hear the doorbell ring and Lilly say "Autumn's here!"
A girl about 18 or 19 launches herself at Logan in a hug.
"Logan!"
"Autumn! Hi, babe." He looks pointedly in my direction to prove a point.
When the two are detached she turns around and spots me.
"Who's this?" She asks.
"That's Grace. And- where's Hazel?"
"Right here!" She weaves her way to us and smiles.
"Right, um, that's Hazel and Grace. They just moved in with us for an unknown reason and they're twins. This is Autumn." Logan says awkwardly.
"Hi! Finally there are some girls in this house! We're going to get along great! We can get our nails done, and go shopping, and- oh! We can go to the spa!" She wraps her arms around us and I groan inwardly.
"Yay. Fun." I force out. Hazel just smiles and laughs.
"Grace doesn't like that stuff. But she's gifted in other things."
"Like what?" Asks Autumn.
"I'm gifted particularly in the arts- music, dance, art, you know, that stuff." I smile.
"Cool! There's a karaoke hour at the party! You should totally do it!" She exclaims.
"Um, okay..." I agree.
This is going to be a long night.
******
We arrive at the party in record time. Everyone loads out of the cars and we go into the big ballroom where the party is being held.
"Girls, come with me. Boys, go do whatever you want- as long as it's acceptable in the current situation." We divide ourselves and the boys wander off, probably looking for food.
"So, girls, I've heard that Grace will be doing the karaoke hour. So, we need to get her dolled up."
"Um, Lilly, aren't I already fine? I mean I have this dress on and everything.."
"Grace, the performers here can't look like guests. They look like performers. And I'm making you dance to a song, too."
"W-What?! I can't dance in front of all these people! It's bad enough I have to sing!" A thought makes it's way to my head. "Wait, if it's karaoke hour, I shouldn't be able to dance." I accuse.
"Well, it's pretty much open to music, dance, or art. They just call it karaoke because it's catchier. You're lucky you only have to dance and sing. Follow me!" We follow her to an empty room with a makeup table and 2 outfits hanging on the closet. "Every performer gets a dressing room." She explains. "Have a seat dear." I sit down in the chair after taking off my dress and putting on a robe.
I close my eyes and can feel people poking and prodding at me, and a tugging at my hair, but disregard it. If I complain, it takes time, and then they have to rush. And I have a feeling that would hurt more.
"So, first you will sing, and then you will come straight back here to change for your dance. The music is on that iPod, so listen to it while we do your hair and makeup and try to choreograph something in your head. She hands me the iPod. I put the headphones in my ear and listen to the beat of the song a couple of times before coming up with a routine. I just hope it works.
