The Sunken Boy

Today I watched a boy die.
He had a light soul but a heavy heart.
I guess that's why we couldn't decide wether he was going to sink or swim
As his heart turned to stone more of it began to consume him
And as he rolled out of my arms I watched him fall
While he was greeted by the watery depths below
I began to think that night
If I hadn't let go what would've become of me?
Would I have been left to the same fate of sinking below the sea?
Sometimes it's not letting go that hurts the most, sometimes it's holding on.
But I suppose when that's all you have left you'd rather drown than watch him be taken away.
It's a grim thing to think that a person could love another so much they'd be willing to drown just to keep holding their hand
They would be willing to die just to attempt to keep the memories alive
Maybe the memories will live my friend,
But we can't live forever all at once.
The best of our days are gone and now it's time for me to let go of your hand
So that I can swim and maybe you can too.
Instead of being suffocated by the love we once held so dear
Meeting the same fate I witnessed today
As I watched us tangle within ourselves and drown in a sea of confusion.
All too often I look around this ocean of mystery and see the same things happening within others
They hold on to the ropes of the past so tight their skin is slashed open
Whereas if they were to just let go they wouldn't have to go through the misery
And all to often I look within myself and see the same things happening to me
These ropes keep tightening and I don't know what to do
Letting go seems difficult, until you just do it.
Then it's the easiest goddamned thing in the world.
And I'm ready to let go of you.
You've caused enough pain and damage in my life
And you are no longer needed
So tonight I'm here to say my final goodbyes and move on to bigger and better things
Because I deserve something a little bigger and a little better,
We all do.
Even the ones who sink.
[A gift to you]
