"What the hell is going on!" I scream as I bury my head into the pillow. I'm drench in sweat, my skin is crawling, head pounding like I put it in a paint shaker machine, and sweet leaping leprechauns! The noise in this place could rival an elephant charging into a loaded train! "Why are there so many people here!" By now I'm so overwhelmed that I don't even know what I'm shouting. All I know is the burning in my neck woke me up.
"The light! The light! It burns! For the love of bacon! Shut the door!" I here a resounding click pound on my ear drums. The mattress dips and the person sighs in resignation. The hairs on my arm stand up. I know who this is. I'd know from 50 yards away with the electrical charge running between us. "What is happening to me?" I whisper to Liam, afraid if I spoke louder my skull would implode.
"I meant to tell you about this sooner, but between getting the packs organized, people moving into our home and petitioning the courts on Gavin's behalf, it slipped my mind till now." He exasperates. The crawling increases as he rubs the back of his neck. My nails dig into my arm to try and rip the sensation out. A vice prevents me from digging deeper into the tissue, so I claw his vice like hand instead.
"Let go of me!" My scream is piercing, even to my own ears. I can hear his grinding teeth.
"Only if you stop harming yourself." Liam soothes.
Frustrated I shoot him a death glare in the pitch black darkness of my room. "What haven't you told me yet? What is wrong with me?!" Liam shifts uncomfortably. "Oh my goodness! I'm dying, aren't I?!"
"No, no, you aren't dying." He calms me down, than adjusts his position to face me better. "I had failed to mention the side effects of the bite I had given you." Liam takes a moment to clear his throat, which irritates me to the point of seriously debating whether or not to rip his throat out. "I was hoping for the change to be gradual. Sometimes the changes come in spurts all at once, until your body has excepted it's fate."
"Please Liam, for my love of cheese fries, tell me you aren't describing puberty because I have already gone through it eons ago!" I cry out.
Liam grunts his discomfort of the accusation. "Well, it sort of is like.........that."
"It was nothing like this!!!!"
"Can I finish?" He asks. I grumble a yes. "You are experiencing the spurts. It'll be uncomfortable for the next month. Your hearing, sight, smell and strength will increase." He pauses as if unsure to continue. "You'll live longer and age as slowly as I do, but if I were to die, than you will age normally once again."
"Oh heavens, I'm going to turn into a dog too, aren't I?" I mumble. Liam actually guffs a short laugh which helps ease some of my symptoms ironically.
"No, you won't turn into a wolf. You're either born with one or your not. Think of our soul connection as having a few perks."
"Perks my booty. More like a nightmare."
"It will all even its self out soon, just bare with it." He soothes. "You may experience mood swings and intense aggression as well." He had to rain on my parade. His hand brushes my cheek. I flinch away. I can feel tension build inside him. "I wasn't going to hurt you Skyler." It's a good thing he can't see in the dark, I hope, because I'm sure I'm red like a tomato. My eyes refuse to look in his direction.
"I know, my skin is just really sensitive right now." I lie. How can I explain that for one second I flashed back to the cabin? Admitting something like that can crush the person you love. I feel his eyes burrowing into me for a few minutes, than the pressure on the bed lifts. The only sounds left in my focus are his footsteps after he shuts the door. I feel awful and guilty, just great.
3 hours later
The pain of hunger momentarily interrupts my wreathing of discomfort. Unable to handle the starvation any longer, I suit up. My pillow wrapped around my head like a cartoon turban with a belt securing it, sunglasses and rubber gloves. I'm sure I look like an idiotic super hero. Fully covered, I heave out a breath preparing for the on-slot of the outside world.
"What in heavens name child!" Trudy announced as I enter the kitchen Toby and Brandy snicker. I glare in thier direction. Something catches my eye. They're holding hands. Toby is staring at Brandy as if she is his whole world. A pang hits my heart as Liam comes to mind. Maybe one day he might look at me like that. They must be mates. A soft joy fills me as that thought occurs. My smile must of been smug because Brandy had the grace to blush behind her braids. Trudey clears her throat. "A new look darling?"
My agitation comes back double force. These mood swings are going to give me whiplash. "Trudey can I have something to eat?" I whisper, afraid my voice would bring my headache back.
"You don't have to ask honey. This is your home." She replies warmly as she fixes me some leftover soup with crackers. "This will settle your stomach and won't be too heavy. I'd hate to make you feel worse. But don't worry Skyler, all of this will soon pass." She cheerfully states. For some reason her tone makes me want to punch through the countertop. She must of sensed my mood and chuckled "you reminded me of when I first found Liam just now." Than floats off to prepare lunch for the newly grown pack.
My mind stays stuck on her last amused words as I return to my room after I finished eating in silence. I want to know more but right now I don't have the patience.
