I woke up and smiled at Hanger’s sleeping face. I had secretly listened in on the thoughts going around while he and the kids talked. I was amazed at how relaxed he was. They really seemed to have taken a shine to him. He even carried Sophia back to the guys. I had smiled as he had said something about being glad he passed the jury. I ignored the dreams that filtered through my head as I checked them. The twins’dreams about the Irish maid at Arianna’s was particularly disturbing.

Arianna was already awake, and her thoughts were crazy. I flinched at the bombardment of thoughts that would hit me when we were back into the real world. I decided not to go see Arianna quite yet, not wanting to get stressed so early. I sat in silence for a few moments, adjusting to the light. It suddenly hit me, that today was the battle we had been training for, waiting for. Arianna kept saying that it posed no threat and we would defiantly win, but if that was true, why was she so worried? My stomach heaved. What if one of the kids got hurt? What if Hanger got hurt? What if any of them got hurt? They were my family, my older brothers and younger siblings, and my parent figures, Arianna and Jasper.

I didn’t notice when Hanger stirred, and sat up. I didn’t realize that I was pacing back and forth like a mad woman. He stepped into my path and wrapped his arms around my shoulders. I wrapped my arms tightly around him and held on for dear life. I bit my lip to keep from crying. He let go and looked down at me.

“Everything’s going to be fine. We’re going to protect the kids. We can go do this.” He said, stroking my hair. I tried to smile, but it came out as more of a grimace.

“I know.”

He searched my face, and I knew that he knew that I was lying. He took my hand and we walked towards where we could hear Arianna pacing, leaves crunching under her feet. She saw us approaching and stopped.

“Good morning. We need to get everyone up.” She said. I went over and wrapped one of my arms around her shoulder, blowing wisps of her brown hair out of my face.

“Why did you choose these kids?” Hanger asked suddenly. I thought of him talking with them the night before. Arianna seemed sort of confused by the question.

“Because of their abilities, and how powerful they are.” I couldn’t quite see where Hanger was going with this.

“Yeah, but why them? There are tons of kids with powers, I’m sure. Like, Ariadne is an amazing girl, but how is affecting the weather going to help us?” he asked. He had a good point. Arianna shook her head.

“Ariadne has mother nature on her side. Not to mention that she can read the stars. In battle, she is valuable, but her expertise is outside of battle.” She said. Hanger didn’t look entirely convinced.

“How about Roxi?” Arianna tugged on the end of her hair.

“She is, once again, more for outside. She is sort of our watch out. As we get deeper into battle, things will start to happen out there in the real world, and we need to stay connected.” she explained, her thoughts obviously elsewhere. Suddenly, Jasper appeared.

“Where did you come from?” I asked. He shook his head.

“Not important. We need to get the others up.” I volunteered to do it while Hanger, Jasper, Arianna got the lay of the land.

I went around and kicked the boys awake in that loving way that I have.

“Get up, sleeping beauty.”  I said when Max rolled back over, grumbling something. The kids were awake almost immediately. And they were scared. I ignored the guys and knelt down in front of them.

“Listen to me. Nothing is going to happen. No one is going to get hurt, or die. We are going to win, no problem. The guys and Hanger and I are going to be right there to protect you. Remember, I hear you all the time.” I tapped my forehead. They relaxed a little. But they knew. They werent just kids. They knew.
