CHAPTER 27- HEARTBREAK?
Emily brought a hand to her chest, trying hard to breathe, but she couldn't. She just ... couldn't. She'd resisted as much as possible, but in the end, she'd broken down. Especially when Mrs. Evans had had the brightest idea of calling her son, to hear from him, and even put him on speaker, so that everybody could greet him.
Emily had felt every single piece of her heart being ripped apart ... all while hearing a voice, a female voice, chirpy, gleeful, as she greeted them back. So it was true, he was with his girlfriend, that's why he couldn't be there, Jason was right. Emily crawled onto the floor and burst out crying, wrapping a hand around her mouth to be silent, while her soul died. Again.
With her hand on her chest, she could feel her heart aching as she cried silently, her body being so numb at this point, that she didn't even feel it when the door of the kitchen was nearly slammed into her while being opened, neither did she care about the loud curse she heard.
"Emily! Sorry ... oh, why are you ..." James cut himself off as he took in her miserable state. She looked so broken, so devastated. It broke his own heart to endure such sight. For once, he felt powerless.
He had no idea what to say or do to console her, he just wanted to make her feel better, but didn't know how. All he did was sit beside her and pull her into him, taking advantage of her not protesting. He said nothing, just cuddled her, let her snuggle into him, hoping that could suffice.
It was a heartbreaking sight. She didn't even hide her tears anymore, she was a flood at this point, not long did it take before his shirt got soaked by those drops of pain, but James said nothing, just remained there, trying to silently comfort her, for how difficult that was. It wasn't hard to understand it had much to do with the phone call the others were still busy with and the person on the other line.
Hell, he'd witnessed the color leave Emily's face while that person spoke, especially when they heard another voice with him, one that seemed very happy to talk to his family and friends, exactly like a girlfriend meeting the parents of her sweetheart.
Everybody had cheered, asking questions about her, Mrs. Evans scolding her son for having kept her hidden, while James remained there, worried about Emily and the way she dug her nails into her thighs not to let a single sound while she gathered all her strength to keep her face blank.
James remained there, rubbing Emily's back as she cried her heart out, unable to stop, not even the thought of her teacher seeing her like that did anything to put a stop to that flood of tears, it was just too painful. When he heard voices nearing the kitchen, James was mindful enough to swiftly stand up with her in his arms and brought her out to the back, so that nobody would see her in that state.
She was so weak, hadn't he held her, she would have crawled to the floor. He wondered how important that person, that Riley, ought to be for her, to reduce her to such state, so devastated, but questions could come later, now, all he could do was sit on the floor with her, not minding the cool air of November, and hold her close, as if to hold together the broken pieces of her heart, or at least trying to.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Riley shouted, his voice ever so booming, flinging his hands in the air. "Why the fuck did you do that?! You know none of tha"t was true! For God's sakes, we're over, Lydia! Stick that into your fucked up mind!"
He was furious, to say the least. Not only had she tricked him into staying with her, using sense of guilt, claiming she was all alone for Thanksgiving, and she didn't feel well, but now she'd even dared introduce herself to his family, to the whole family, as his girlfriend, causing thousands of questions from his mother and sister, and all the others that seemed so interested.
