CHAPTER 33 - SPELLS ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN

Riley waited against his car, not daring to enter, but with a grin on his face. The past couple of days had been antsy, and he was very, very nervous, but also overjoyed, to say the least. And the reason was easily explained.

He was waiting outside the Robinson's house, for someone specific, for a very specific reason. His romantic soul couldn't help cooing at the sole idea. A date on Christmas Eve. If this wasn't the epitome of romantic, what was?

He'd spent the past couple of days waiting, waiting, and waiting. For Emily to make up her mind, of course. Last time they spoke in person, he'd asked her a very specific question, but all he'd received was silence, only deafening silence.

He didn't press her, just waited patiently, even if antsy, and, finally, after a good five minutes, the response came: she needed time. Time to think and make up her mind. Riley had wanted to argue she'd had three months to think, but he said nothing, just nodded, then left.

After three days, that morning, Emily finally texted him, asking if they could talk, which was already a big step per se, he knew that, therefore he only agreed, but when she asked for an hour to meet, he dared ask for a date instead. Surprisingly, she said yes.

Which brings us back here, with Riley nervously waiting outside her house, anxious more than he'd never been when going out with a girl. And when the front door finally opened, his breaths caught in his throat.

Emily slowly got out, her hands all clammy. She'd spent hours getting ready, without the slightest idea what to wear, she'd have wanted to ask Vanessa, but she knew her friend was too busy preparing for the special date with her boyfriend, actually, the girl had been so distracted, so concentrated on the matter and on all the Jason in jail situation, that Emily hadn't even had the chance to tell her about the talk she'd had with Riley on her birthday.

Her parents would have wanted to celebrate her, but Emily hadn't wanted to, with her brother in prison, it wouldn't have felt right, she'd said. Her sole celebration had been a cake made by her mother for the purpose.

Being born a couple of days before Christmas had its perks, but not always: it was good because it was the first day of holidays, therefore there was no worrying about school, but because Christmas was just around the corner, people tended to just mingle the two celebrations, if they did recall it at all. All in all, her relatives were mostly convinced she was born on Christmas day, given how many wishes she received.

This particular birthday had been different, though. Because, more than think about wishes and celebrations she needed to escape, she ought to ponder over matters of much more importance. She'd asked for time because she didn't know what else to say, but neither did she want to say no. Because the answer was yes.

That's why now she was nervously, slowly walking towards him, careful not to meet his gaze, knowing that otherwise she wouldn't be able to cope with the tension. She'd dressed casual, Vanessa would have most certainly had her wear a dress, but she'd have never felt at ease, and for how important this night was, it was also essential that she felt comfortable, therefore she'd only pushed her usual attire enough to wear dark blue jeans, blue flannel shirt beneath a grey pullover, and boots, she'd even put on the bangles Vanessa had got her, and she'd put enough effort into her hair, to spend two hours to learn and then make a braid in Frozen's Elsa style, she even used a couple of small snowflake hair clips to make it look like the original in the movie. She'd dared with makeup, studying tutorials, trying to recall what Vanessa did every time, and even though it took hours to learn, she was finally able to pull off a decent natural look with makeup.
