A Smile To Hide The Pain

Being Normal.

Olivia sat and watched as Eli slept in her arms. He looked so peaceful, so innocent. She softly stroked his cheek and smiled at his seemingly happy expression. She was sending Amelia to preschool in the morning and she was nervous. Amelia was quite small because of all the time she had spent being locked up.

The next day Olivia was up early making breakfast for the kids. Elliot hadn't stayed over he wanted to break things off with Melody before anything else. He was going to do what was right. And Olivia appreciated his respect. "Amelia breakfast!" she called as she was trying to do a million things at once.
"Coming!" Amelia called excitedly. She ran in dressed and ready in a beautiful floral print dress. "Do I look pretty mommy?" she asked cheerfully.
"You look amazing" Olivia smiled handing her,her plate so she could get back to feeding Eli who was becoming irritable.
Amelia finally looked happy. Olivia told her how much fun she was gonna have and all the friends she was going to make. She sang the whole way there in the car. Olivia gave her a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek before she had to leave.

Amelia looked around all the kids seemed bigger than she was and she was scared. "Hi I'm Amelia" she said nervously to a girl who was working tirelessly on a puzzle.
"I don't play with weirdos" the girl said as Amelia trembled before her. "Go away!" she yelled and with that Amelia ran off. She decided to think positive.
"Hi I'm Amelia" she smiled. This time she was talking to a little boy who was making shapes with play dough.
"Hi" he said and she sat beside him excitedly.
"Can I play?" she asked taking one of the shape makers. The boy pushed her angrily.
"You messed it up!" he yelled.
"I-I'm sorry" Amelia stuttered. A teacher walked over to see what was wrong.
"She's being mean to me!" the boy yelled and the teacher looked at Amelia with disappointment. She brought her to the time out corner. Amelia curled up in a ball and cried.

An hour later Olivia arrived in a hurry. She was a bit late for picking Amelia up. "Sorry I'm late" she told the teacher as she picked Amelia up. She got her in the car. "How was your first day?" Olivia asked as they drove.
"Why aren't we normal mommy?"
"We are normal. What are you talking about?"
"No one likes me. I'm short and ugly and my clothes are ugly. No one likes me" she said and Olivia could hear her voice shaking.
"Amelia. .. You're just special. Being different is good. It means you're not boring"
"Well you're just saying that cause you're pretty and I'm not" Amelia said beginning to cry. She cried the whole way home until she had cried herself to sleep. Olivia brought her inside and called Elliot to tell him what happened.

Elliot awoke when his phone rang. He saw Olivia calling and he sighed softly. "Who's calling?" Melody asked cuddling up close to him.
"No one" he said hanging up....
