The warmth of the sun reminded Serer of her brother, Jonjo, who was slain during the attack of Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren. Harsh memories replayed in her mind. She remembered her brother telling her to flee as he ran back to try and help the others. The tears which streamed down her face as she tried to free herself from Luke's grasp to help him, but then was pulled out of his sight. She never saw her brother again, but from what Kylo Ren had told her, she had no more hope to.
Serer hadn't noticed the silent tears falling from her eyes now as they made their way through the forest and closer to Maz Kanata's Castle, as Poe had told her.
Poe looked back at Serer, seeing her looking quite distraught. "Are you alright?" His eyebrows knitted together.
He watched her eyes lift from the ground and look into his. She quickly whipped away her tears, feeling embarrassed for showing such weakness. "I'm fine."
"You don't seem fine." Responded Poe, now raising an eyebrow.
"Well, I am." Serer snapped at him.
He turned his head forward, seeing the Castle's distance not too far away. Serer narrowed her eyes forward at the approaching structure, feeling something she hadn't in a very long time.
...
They had finally reached the front door of the giant structure, gazing upon it with awe. Banners hung above them, flapping in the slight breeze. Serer's eyes narrowed themselves at everything around them, it was nothing like she had ever seen.
Poe opened one of the doors, loud music coming from within. Walking inside, Serer tried not to stare at the unhumanly creatures surrounding them. The music was lively as the creatures played games of some sort to which she had no knowledge of. Gambling, she imagined.
"Poe Dameron!" A voice called as a creature walked toward them. The lady was short and orange skinned, wearing magnifying goggles on her eyes.
"Maz! How've you been?" Poe responded graciously, bending down to give his old friend a gentle hug.
"Fine, fine!" She responded, a slight grin appearing on her face. Maz froze for a second, thoroughly examining Serer. "Who's she?" Maz asked Poe, as he stood tall once more, without taking her eyes away from Serer.
"I am Serer." She responded, bending down to look Maz square in the eyes.
"Your eyes, I recognize them." Maz whispered, adjusting her goggles so they magnified even more.
"I do not know you." Serer spoke, now standing up straight once again.
"Perhaps not your eyes exactly." Maz stated, her words confusing Serer. "Come with me."
Maz took Serer's hand, pulling her along. Looking back at Poe, he smiled at her before taking her other hand into his own. Poe squeezed Serer's hand, letting her know what whatever Maz was to show her would not harm her.
"Jonjo!" Maz called out to a man sitting at a table by his lonesome in a darkened corner. "I have someone here who I think might know you."
A hooded cloak concealed the mans face, but Serer watched his head lift slowly in her direction. "Jonjo?" Serer whispered in disbelief.
The man lifted his hands to the hood, to which revealed two robotic hands instead of the human ones he once possessed. Jonjo took off his hood and revealed his face to Serer.
"You are not my sister." Jonjo spoke gruffly as Serer's mouth fell agape. "She died a long time ago, under the wing of Luke Skywalker."
"Jonjo, it's me!" Serer spoke, rushing over to him and throwing her arms around his neck. "I survived!"
He looked into her eyes, and saw the same ones he looked into all that time ago. Every memory came flooding back to him. He threw his arms around his sister, their hearts racing with excitement and relief.
...
"Where exactly have you been all this time?" Serer asked her brother as they feasted on the food Maz had brought for them.
"When I thought you had died, I became a bounty hunter." Jonjo responded as Serer touched his cold, metal hands.
"You joined the darkness?" Poe questioned.
"Not exactly." Jonjo responded, taking a bite out of his food.
"How did you survive the attack?" Serer asked.
"Kylo Ren looked me square in the eye, sliced off my hands, but left me there alive. After getting my robotic ones, I went onto becoming a bounty hunter." Make my living that way." He responded.
"All that matters now is that we've found each other at last." Serer spoke, smiling over at her brother.
"You'll come with us then, back to the Resistance?" Poe asked as he watched Serer's eyes light up.
"Only for a short while, I can't be away from my job too long." Jonjo chuckled.
"We do need a favor of you, Maz." Poe spoke.
"As I suspected, what is it?" She responded from across the table.
"We need an undetectable ship. Something that can get us to the Resistance without having First Order party crashers on our tail." Stated Poe, taking a drink from his glass.
"I have a little something hidden in the forest, tomorrow I will show it to you and you can take it."
"Is there any chance you could fix a lightsaber as well?" Serer now questioned.
"What sort of damage?" Asked Maz as Serer took the lightsaber from her belt and handed it to her.
"Water." Serer responded.
"I can try, but I do not promise." Maz now stood from her chair, taking the lightsaber with her. "You all may sleep in the basement tonight, and take the ship with you in the morning."
"Thank you, Maz. For everything." Serer spoke, taking her hand.
"Dear child, you are so much more than you know." Maz spoke with a small smile before walking away from the table.
...
Serer took in the musty smell of the basement as she laid down in between Poe and Jonjo. Taking off her jacket, she rolled it up to make a pillow. She then placed the blaster by her feet, just incase a situation would happen I which she needed it.
The heavy breathing of the men and quietness of the Castle caused Serer to fall quickly into a deep sleep.
