North Carolina. The 12th state is both similar and different from her sister, South Carolina. Despite hating her twin for her bratty attitude, she can be bratty herself and at times be just as stubborn. She'll always deny this, often pointing out in detail her differences from her twin. Two frustrating peas in a pod. How the two came to be is quite a story.

During the British colonization of North America, the Crown originally gave a charter for a Carolina colony. Just one colony. While the colony was developing, Carolina proprietors were beginning to argue among themselves on how to govern the land. As settlers farmed the land, the environment between north and south began to differ. With the southern locale having better development with their large plantations, the northern locale grew to dislike their methods, even growing jealous of their success.

Eventually, this tense relationship split the Carolina colony into North and South from 1712 and onward. For both sisters, they assumed to be the one and only Carolina, living separate lives without a clue of another sibling. When news came of their permanent separation, North Carolina made the effort to meet her other half for the first time. It was a meeting that'll forever define the twin's relationship with one another.

"And you are?"

"I-I... Um..."

I couldn't bring myself to tell her.

I had rehearsed for three days, wanting to make a good impression. I even made the journey south, asking the local communities for their assistance in finding her. When I finally made it to her home, I was amazed to find her lifestyle so...so rich. A large plantation home with acres of tobacco and indigo. Her servants suggested she may be in the back where a meadow was spared for her own pleasure. Alone, I made my way through the property before arriving at the bottom of a hill full of white daisies and yellow-green grass. Sitting alone among a circle of goldenrod at the top of the hill was the girl I was looking forward to meeting.

Her dress was much puffier and more decorated than mine, sewn with a dozen cute bows and dyed in every shade of pink compared to my plain, brown dress. Her long twin tails were adorned with a pair of shamrock green ribbons while mine could only afford one. She didn't look any taller than me. In fact, it was like looking at a magic mirror, a reflection of myself, one in a life full of luxury. And yet, she was her own person.

It was strange. When they told me I have a sister, I was unsure by what they meant at first. Up until now, I had lived on my own knowing my name was Carolina. Yet, it turns out there was another girl who looked nearly identical to me, holding the same name. For a while. I questioned my existence, thinking she might be a look-alike. When news of our home's separation confirmed the truth, I couldn't wait to see who she was. After all these years, here I was looking at my doppelganger in amazement.

I wasn't prepared to answer here when she met my eyes. She glared suspiciously at me.

"Geez. Can you even speak properly?" she scoffed.

I was taken aback by her rude attitude. "E-Excuse me?"

She rolled her eyes in a dramatic manner. "Look. I'm currently busy with something." She was making a flower crown. "If you have nothing important to say, then leave."

I frowned on her nasty response.

'She is nothing like me,' I agonized over the girl I had met.

She acted more like a bratty twat living off cake and cookies for a living than the older sister I expect her to be. She may look like me, however, that's as far as the similarities go. Then again, she may be nice. She's probably acting out because I'm simply a stranger to her. That makes sense. I guess I'll just have to be careful with my words and appear harmless like a butterfly.
