Side Chapter 5: Puerto Rico and the Territories

A/N as of 5/2/19: Since this side chapter's original release date, I've made Hetalia OCs personifying the U.S. Territories. Their character profiles are listed in one of my Hetalia OC guides called Hetalia: Guide to the Fifty States. Feel free to check that out on my Wattpad profile.

As such, this side chapter might seem outdated. But rather than update this side chapter, I decided to leave it as is. Either way, I hope anyone who's interested in the U.S. Territories finds what I written about them entertaining at the very least.

What is the United States of America? Is it just the country, the states, and the capital? Or, is there more to the nation than that?

Outside the States of America, there are U.S. territories who remain a part of America since the old days of imperialism. Like the states, these territories have their own history, culture, and people whom are distinct from one another. Most of the time, these territories in comparison to the states aren't considered "significant" to most people, thus I decided to dedicate this side chapter to them.

On the exception of American Samoa, the people who live in these territories are U.S. citizens, meaning they're as equal as anyone from the states (to some degree). To dismiss these territories as "American land" is a huge disrespect to not only those living in the territories, but to America as well. For America as a character, he, too, cares about these territories and does his best to spend time with them. The territories to some aspect respect the American goofball despite his carelessness and love him very much.

Whether I'm going to include them (creating personifications of such territories and writing stories about their history, culture, etc.) in this fanfiction series is still being debated. Personally, I have over fifty OCs I need to keep track and write about, so the five territories I could create and write about might overwhelm me. Plus, in terms of research, I'm pretty limited on the chapters I could do for each territory. With these two reasons, most likely I won't make daily chapters on the territories. However, I may do side chapters on the territories once in a while. For now, the territories won't be mentioned yet until later in the future. I'm still developing and researching the territories, so it may be a while until I feature them in this fanfiction.

Until then, I have created shortened summaries on the five territories I can write about. My interpretation of these territories was briefly researched, but hopefully they're alright. Overall, I hope this side chapter influences and inspires other Hetalia OC creators to create these territories when making Hetalia OCs, especially in inclusion with the States of America. American Samoa: Male around 15 years old in appearance. Known for his strong, buff appearance due to his military history. Je's quite athletic in sports such as Samoan cricket, rugby, and volleyball. Currently he's working on becoming an American citizen instead of an American national, but apparently Congress is being picky with him and are too busy to update his status. Until then, his uncanny love for tuna will sustain him for now. 

Guam: Male around 15-16 years old in appearance. Although an American territory in the Pacific, he holds numerous cultures such as Spanish, Filipino, Micronesian, and even Mexican. Despite not being as athletic as American Samoa, he's well-known for his unique music and dance. Loves to create his own fashion; sometimes he would hand out homemade bracelets and necklaces to tourists whenever they come to his home. Quite kind and generous in terms of sharing and cooperation. 

Northern Mariana Islands: Female around 14 years old in appearance. Simply called Mariana, she shares similar traits with Hawaii such as their love for SPAM; only she's more known to be energetic and athletic than the carefree Hawaiian. Speaking of athleticism, Mariana is quite talented in sports such as baseball and basketball along with being an expert in mixed martial arts. Not only great in sports, she's also talented in cooking; making various kinds of cuisine from Spanish empanadas to Filipino pancit to her local kelaguen on occasion. Sometimes she would visit Guam during her free time.

Puerto Rico: Male around 16-17 years old in appearance. He's the closest out of the five territories to statehood. Despite suffering various hardships, especially with his current debt and poverty crisis, he's quite humble and proud of his identity. In terms of his relation to America, he admires the country, however, he can be emotional in terms of the country's remote stance on issues related to him. His influence is quite contagious thanks to famous Puerto Ricans who helped spread his culture throughout the States of America in one way or another.

U.S. Virgin Islands: Female around 15 years old in appearance. She currently wants self-determination, but her massive debt and America's stance on the matter prevent her from rushing into that decision. Besides her debt problem, she's also trying to meditate relations between tourists and her own natives; both sides seemingly disliking one another for their own reasons. Despite such problems, the young girl would often distract herself in calypso and reggae music; sometimes creating her own music and dances doing so. On an interesting note, she's siblings with the British Virgin Islands; despite living in separate spheres of influence, they remain close while retaining their unique culture altogether.
