I close the door behind me, and sigh.
"So how'd it go?"
I shrieked and looked in the kitchen. "Owen, you scared me! What are doing still here?"
He smiled. "I already missed your meeting. Did you really think I wouldn't want to hear all about it?"
In all the excitement, I'd forgotten that I'd left him behind.
"Oh right." I said, "sorry Owen. It went really well I think." I grinned. "He's amazing."
"What's he like?" Owen asked, "and what does he look like?" With only a few weeks left until he'd meet his own soulmate, he had to be excited.
"His name is Isaac. He's very handsome. Tall, with dark hair and the brightest green eyes you'll ever see." I laughed. "And he's very kind. He has a talent for putting me at ease. I guess, he'd have to be, since he's my, you know..."
"Soulmate." Owen said. "You don't like that word anymore?"
I thought about what he had asked. "I guess it's just easier to apply that word to a person you've never met. But now that I have met him, it feels too strange to call him my soulmate when we barely know each other."
"Yeah, I guess that makes sense." He pondered, "most people don't meet their soulmates when they're as young as we are, but my older brother never used that word to describe his soulmate either." Owen's brother, Daniel, had met his soulmate when he was in middle school. They were both off at college now, studying biochemistry. He never talked about it much, but I could tell that Owen missed Daniel like crazy.
"When will you see him again?" Owen asked.
"Hopefully tomorrow," I told him, "he's starting at our school."
"Oh yeah? I'll probably get to meet him then!" It was funny how excited he was. But I really couldn't blame him. Owen was my best friend, and I didn't want him to disappear just because I've now met my soulmate. I wanted him to remain a part of my life for a good while yet.
"Yeah, probably. We're hoping we'll have classes together."
He laughed, "are you sure that wouldn't be too distracting?"
"Well... Maybe." I don't think he'd try and distract me on purpose, but those eyes of his... That might get a little distracting.
I giggled, "I think I could manage it though."
"Well," he said, "I guess we'll find out tomorrow."
