Annette woke the next morning. It was a wonderful feeling. She was warm and well rested. She was used to waking cold, and usually unable to sleep. Johnston. Her family was rich, very rich. But she hated her family. She had run away from them. Her attempt failed, the first time. This was her second time trying to run away and it was working, so far. She never boared with another family, afraid they'd choose the reward money for bringing her back over her own wishes. But this was different. This woman, Jewel. She was different, nice. She didn't care who the girl was, though it was obvious she recognised the name.
"LOGAN!" She heard Jewel yell. It had scared her. Chuckling, she slowly got up out of the warm, hard bed. She slowly open the door peeking her small head out of the door. She was greeted by a small boy.
"Hello. I'm Logan." He smiled.
"Oh! You're Logan. I'm Annette."
"Um...I believe you're in my room" the boy replied softly chuckling.
"Logan! Have you forgotten your manners? Miss Annette is our guest and currently this is her room, understand, young man?" Jewel snapped at her son. His smile faded and his head dropped.
"Sorry ma'am" he said turning to his mother.
"Don't tell me sorry, tell her that."
He turned to Annette. "I'm sorry for being rude to you, Annette. You may have my room for as long as you please"
Annette smiled at the generosity. "You're forgiven, and thank you very much. I truly appreciate your generosity." This made him happy. He couldn't help but gri n. She was so polite. Even to him.
Jewel smiled at this site. It was truly beautiful.
"Come now" she set a guiding hand on the young girl's back. "Come have some breakfast" They walked to the small kitchen, Logan following close behind. The smell of fresh biscuits met Annette's nose. She closed her eyes and smiled, breathing in the wondrous smell.
"I'm sorry it's not much, but it's about all we have." Jewel said in a low tone, trying to hide the true sadness in her voice. The boy heard the sadness though. Both of the children did. The boy felt the same sadness. When his father was still alive they had had money. They weren't rich, but they could survive on the money, and had a bit to spare. When his father died, all that changed. The money they had currently was quickly disappearing. There was no work for Jewel, not that she wanted to work. She had a son to take care of, and If there was any way of being home with her son and still having money, show would take it.
"I'm going ito town, Logan. Don't Be mischievous while I'm gone." Jewel announced after breakfast was finished.
"Yes ma'am. Why're you going to town?" Logan asked.
"We need food, do we not?" She smiled. He happily shook his head grinning.
"Yes we do." He stood from his seat and hugged her legs as she stood in the doorway. She smiled. "I love you, mum"
"I love you too, dear. Well, best be off." She bent down, kissing his head. Then she stood and left.
