Chapter 44

(James)

We arrived. I was told to close my eyes and don't open them over the whole ride.

"Open them" Danny whispered.

And so I did.

Shit.

What are we doing here?

"Danny!" I screamed.

I didn't want to be here. I had nothing to do with this place.

"Hey, baby.."
"No, Danny! What are we doing here?"
"Visiting your parents!"
"They ain't my parents!"
"Yes, they are!"
"But they don't want to be!"
"Oh, come one. What can happy?"
"What? Oh, my so called father will beat the shit out of us and my so called mother will just sit there and drink." I looked at him and added "if she's not high yet."
"Guys. Maybe I can go there first, okay?" his mother interrupted us.

I looked at her. Why would she voluntary go into hell?

"Okay, mum" Danny replied and she got up.
"Won't they see us?"
"Don't worry. The panes are shaded."
"I'm worrying about your mum."
"She'll manage this all."

I sighed and leant back in my seat. Why would he do this all? Why would his mum do this? Why would she do this for me?

I saw the door being opened and my father sticked his head outside. He was shouting, so it was no problem to hear him.

"What do you want?"
"I want you to listen to me!"
"Who are you?"
"I'm a friend."
"Of who?"
"Your son."
"I don't have a son."

Surprisingly, I wasn't shocked. It had been obvious that he would say exactly this. They didn't want me. Otherwise they wouldn't have thrown me out.

"Yes, you do."
"And what's his name?"
"James."
"Okay, listen. Whoever you are. James is not my son. I'm not his father. And this is not his mother."

I saw my mum standing behind him. She looked horrible.

"Mum" I mumbled.

It was awful seeing her like this. Now that my father couldn't beat me anymore he must best get instead. Her eyes were blue and bloodshot. Of course she was high.

Danny looked at me.

"Hey..."
"Can we leave now?"
"Yes."

His mum turned around in the same second and walked back to the car.

"I'm sorry, Daniel" she said and drove us back home.

"Shit" Danny stumbled to himself.
"It's not your fault."
"I shouldn't have brought you here."
"It's okay."
"You don't look like it is."
"It's really okay."

I didn't want to lie, but he did his best and it just didn't turn out the way he wanted. But that was no wonder. My father denied me and my mother was too high to do anything against him. It wasn't his fault. It was mine. I've been a terrible son. I had brought shame to my family. Of course the reason is stupid, there's no denying this. But I had not need to come out of the closet.
