My struggling stopped as the first wave of the mixture of shock and disbelief washed over me. It couldn't be. Myra? My loving wife, a woman I had given my heart to couldn't be standing in front of me. Her disappearance had left me in a broken state, plunged deep into the depths of misery. The demise of my innocent daughter, Lily had already cracked my resolve and was the reason for me turning to the comfort of alcohol. Losing Myra had destroyed the world I once knew. She had been on duty and never came back. All that remained of her presence was a single, handwritten note informing me I had to finish the investigation into Lily's suspicious death and that her disappearance meant she had come too close to the truth. Coming to an empty house was enough to send me into a mental breakdown, grief running its jagged claws across my heart. Staring down the vacant hallway as soon as I opened the front door triggered memories of Lily running down the hall to greet me, wanting me to pick her up and play with her. It had become routine and at the end of each exhausting day at work, it was my favourite part of the day. I couldn't even begin to feel the slightest wisp of happiness at the memory. It had died in the flames that consumed my Lily, disintegrating into black ash that only choked me when I thought back to those memories I had shared with her. The day Myra left only added to the pile of ashes that coated each aspect of my life. But now, she was here. Not a hallucination. It felt too genuine to be a figment of my already deranged mind. She wore a sad smile as she silently observed me for a few moments, taking in the expression of disbelief that had registered on my face. Her auburn hair was now blonde but there was no mistaking that face.
"Hello Sebastian," the all too familiar voice of my wife spoke. "I guess it was a matter of time before you found me."
I didn't take my eyes off her as she pulled a chair closer to me and sat down. She folded her hands in her lap and lowered her eyes, almost afraid to look at me again. I wanted to say something but my mind drew a blank as the words failed to fall into a sentence. Besides, the cloth Mobius had gagged me with wasn't going to help in trying to communicate with the woman I had been trying to find for years.
"You probably want an explanation," Myra finally said. "For why I left. Why I'm here now."
She exhaled and laughed shakily, "I don't even know where to begin. Or whether you'll believe me or not. I wouldn't blame you if you didn't. But it's worth a shot."
She finally lifted her eyes to meet mine, tears already forming in the corners of her eyes.
"I want you to listen to what I have to say," Myra continued, straightening up. "I'll start from the moment I began the investigation into Lily's murder. Sebastian, I promise I will tell you the truth."
I just nodded as a sign of understanding as she took a deep breath and launched into her story.
"As you know, when Lily...........died, I had suspicions about the nature of the fire," Myra began, the reminder of the tragedy showing the scars it left. "Sebastian, I stand by what I said. This was no accident. It was lit deliberately. Somebody was targeting us, sending us a warning. That was when my investigation started. I was desperate to find the faintest shred of evidence to bring Lily's killer to the light. It took months of investigating and that was when the death threats started rolling in. Some of them threatened to hurt you. I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want to alarm you. I thought by keeping you in the dark, I could protect you."
Death threats? The thought of Myra being sent death threats scared me. The ones involving me didn't terrify me nowhere near as much as the ones directed towards Myra. She reached out and started absent-mindedly playing with my hair like she used to as she continued her story again.
"It continued to get worse. Then the day I disappeared came. I was on duty, sent to investigate a break-in. It turned out the break-in was just a cover story to get me there. As soon as I entered the house, they took me. Had a bag over my head and dragged me into a car. I ended up here. It took them hours to convince me that this was my calling. They had knowledge of my investigation into Lily's death and said they could help. On one condition; I work for them. The opportunity was there and I had to take it. I had to bring her killer to justice. I entrusted the remainder of my investigation to you but as I illustrated in my note, I was hoping you wouldn't find the evidence. Seeing you get hurt is my biggest fear. They didn't let me see you. Once you become inducted into Mobius, there's no turning back. They put me on several cases but the most notable one was the Ruvik case."
