Chapter 1: The Meeting

She was gorgeous, I thought the first time I saw her. I'd been talking with Eli Robertson, my best friend, when all of a sudden I caught sight of an angel in purple. I was immediately drawn to her and tried to get a better look at her. She was very pretty, with her long brown hair, green eyes, and petite figure. Eli snapped his fingers in front of my face.

"Hey!" He said. He tapped me on the shoulder. I jumped and turned to face him.

"What?" I asked casually.

"Who's that chick? You looked like a fish," he snickered. I whacked his shoulder.

"Hey, don't call her a 'chick', she's a young woman. And I do not," I said with a bit of an attitude.

"Ooh, someone's got a crush," he teased.

"I do not," I said defensively.

"Sure you don't," Eli said teasingly.

"I don't," I said, finality in my voice as I turned and started heading to English.

"Bye," Eli called as he headed to his class.

I waved vaguely in his direction. As I stepped into my class, I noticed the girl I had been looking at walking in the same direction. She followed me into the classroom. Inside I was jumping with joy. "Yes!" I thought to myself. "She's in my English class." I took a seat and, looking around, I noticed that my whole area was gone. Suddenly, she came up and sat right next to me.

"Hi," she said with a dazzling smile.

I swallowed. "Hi," I said nervously, trying not to show it.

"My name is Lily," she said, "Lily Palmer."

"I'm Joshua, Joshua Noble."

She smiled at me. "Nice to meet you, Joshua Noble."

"And you, Miss Palmer," I said with a slight bow. She giggled and tried to curtsy in her dress.

"All right class, settle down," Mrs. Piper, our English teacher (who was from England, funnily enough) said in her thick accent. She's second only to Mrs. C, the music teacher, who is absolutely amazing. Anyway, English went by without a hitch. Lily and I are best friends now. After English, I walked Lily to her next class, which just so happened to be mine. Silently dancing in my head, I opened the door for her and gently guided her through the door.

"Thank you, Joshua," she said.

"It was no problem," I said, grinning at her. She smiled back and bumped into someone.

"Oof!" A snooty voice said. Oh, no. I grabbed Lily's hand and whispered "Run," guiding her to the back of the classroom where we sat down and started talking, pretending that we had been there the whole time.

"Who just bumped into me?" She shrieked. I winced at the shrill, piercing note in her voice. Lily tried to say "I did" but I quickly covered her mouth. She looked at me, surprised, but fell silent.

"Now, now, Vanessa, sit down," our chemistry teacher said.

"But someone bumped into me," she whined.

"Sit down," Mr. Jacobs said sternly.

Vanessa grumbled judgingly, muttering something about teachers who had no pity, but she sat down at the front. I sighed silently and tried to listen to the lesson.
