Carl's POV

A chill goes down my spine as I lay my back againist the cold, metal wall. I rest my head on my knees once again and lay my hat on the floor. Tears begin to swell in my eyes again. Jordyn.....

Micah is now motherless. He will never get to know the beautiful creature he was supposed to call Mom. She is gone. Forever.

No. She's not. She's still laying asleep in that recliner at her house. She's not dead. She's just not here. Somewhere safe.

I keep telling myself that, but I know it's not true. None of it is true. Everything is just one big lie that I have to live with for the rest of my life. Micah may look almost a lot like me, but I will always see Jordyn's reflection when I look into his eyes. I'll remember every little detail I ever spent with her. Every thought that occurred to me whenever she was present. Every little thought will stay in my mind and make me remember. Make me regret everything that led us to this.

"Lunch time. You hungry, Grimes?" asks the guard.

I don't answer. I don't even flinch.

"Hey, Grimes! Look at me when I'm speaking to you!"

I lift my head and scowl at her while salt water spills from my eyelids. "No," I snarl. "Take it. I don't want it."

"You gotta eat. Here." He slides the tray under the gate.

"I told you. I don't want it."

"Say that again one more time."

I get up slowly, walk over to the gate, grip the bars to where my knuckles turn white and snarl, "I don't want your pity excuse for food."

"That's it. Harley!"

"Yeah, Deanna?"

"Teach this boy some manners. I don't think they understand how we run things around here." She crosses her arms.

"Get him and bring him outside to the courtyard. We got us a rookie." He grins and walks off.

She unlocks the gate and places both my hand at the top of my back forcibly. They push me forward, even though I refuse to move my feet anymore.

"Move." Harley pushes me, but I still don't move.

"Move," he repeats.

"Why should I?" I reply.

He hear the shuffle of a holster, then a cold circle is placed on the back of my neck.

"I'm not going to tell you one more time. Move."

I start to say "go ahead," but then Micah climbs his way into my thoughts once again. He has already lost one parent, so he can't lose the other. I have to be strong. For him.

I step forward but at my own pace. Deanna nods with a grin as I pass by, and I want to wrap my cold hands around her throat, but I can't bring myself to do it.

Harley pushes me out of the door and tells me to stand to the side. I do as I'm told. I step aside and let me back ease down the wall, and I prop my elbows on my knees and tip my hat down.

Then I hear the shift of a shotgun, along with footsteps.

I rise. When he enters, I stare at him blankly, even though I'm terrified inside.

"Face that way," he points toward the city. I obey.

He walks in the same direction he pointed and faces me, holding the shotgun. Locked and loaded.

"I am going to shoot this gun around your body, and if you flinch, that's where you're going to be shot. Got it?"

"What's the point in this? Making your prisoners fear this place? Making them obey? This won't help. It'll just make things worse. I used to be a sheriff, so I should know. Take my word for it; I'm trying to help."

He places the gun in the corner. "And why would you try to help us?"

I take a deep breath. "I don't know. Maybe I'm being stupid for trying to be helpful, but that's what has made me who I am."

Deanna and Harley both stare at me for a few seconds with they're mouth touching the floor.

Deanna declares, "Come with me."

And we walk back inside, and I hear the shot of a shotgun.

Ashton's POV

"On the afternoon of September 29, 2015, Peeta Mellark and Jordyn Samuels were murdered at Meadow View hospital at 12:34 a.m. The murderer has been identified as Carl Grimes. Grimes used to be our town's sheriff until all the prisoners escaped, and the prison was soon closed. To read more information, go to our paper's website at http://georgiasnewsfeed.com," Finnick says as he reads today's paper.

"I'm tired of running after him! Half of our tributes are gone! What are we supposed to do! I promised many, many people a bloody, death-defying show! How am I supposed to do that without tributes?!"

"I don't know, but you know we have that 'secret weapon.'"

"Yeah. But that can only be used against Carl, idiot! What about the other tributes?! We don't have enough tributes, Finnick! What are you not getting?!"

"I got a plan, and I'm pretty sure you'll like it. But you'll have to get your lazy ass out of that Gamemaking chair for once."

"Haha. Very funny," I roll my eyes. "Tell me."

"Not here. We have to discuss it more privately."

He walks outside, and I follow.
