He couldn't believe his eyes, you, the one woman he loved with all of his heart in the arms of his best friend. He watched from where he stood, eyes focused on the scene because he was unable to pry them away. He watched you smile and laugh while his best friend held you. He couldn't tell what you two were talking about because he was focused on the fact that he wanted to be the one holding you. He was envious, jealous, and heartbroken. He couldn't watch you two anymore so he walked the opposite direction.
You had grown up with Kakashi, Gai, Kurenai, and many others that were now Jonin that trained their own teams. As for you, you work where you were needed around the village. From helping at the academy to working simple missions. You were back up and one of Tsunade's most valuable versatile ninja. You quite adore your life here in Konohagakure and your friends only made it better.
You had to be honest you had grown fond of Kakashi, he had been there whenever you needed him. He may not have said much but he was there for you to talk with and that was enough for you most of the time. Over time your infatuation with him only grew but he never showed any interest and you had pushed your feelings for him aside and took up Gai on his offer. Now, you were happy with him even though in the back of your mind you still thought of Kakashi.
You liked Gai, he was sweet and offered you anything and everything you wanted but he wasn't the man you wanted. As nice a man he was he wasn't the one you had fallen in love with, he made you happy but he didn't fill that spot Kakashi did but with said man showing no interest you ignored the feelings.
It wasn't hard to notice the change in Kakashi if you were anyone but her, if you watched him he sulked and look genuinely sad. He did smile but the smile never meant anything and his other friends had noticed, even offered him advice but he didn't heed any of their words. He didn't believe them when they said that you loved him, that you only went with Gai because he offered and showed interest in you. He couldn't wrap his head around it, that the times you two spent alone together would have shown you that he cared deeply for you.
That was your same problem, you heard all of your friends words but none of them mattered or sank in. You believed that the time you shared with him meant as much to him as it did to you. You believed that as much time you spent with him this would have shown him how much you loved him but it didn't seem that way, to you at least. You came to the conclusion that he only cared about you as a friend and nothing more.
"Oooph!" You bumped straight into another body and fell straight onto your bum with a pained grunt.
"Ow. That hurt!" You glared up at the person only to realize it was Kakashi who was now grinning under his mask.
"Sorry about that, weather down there okay?" He offered you a gloved hand which you took gratefully while you stuck your tongue out at him.
"Real funny, 'Kashi, what are you doing down this way anyways? I thought you had some students to teach or scold?" You smiled holding onto this arm like you always did. It had become a habit. A habit he quite liked, it made him feel close to you even for a little while.
"Had, they finished up for the day. It's almost dark you know." He pointed up towards the sky and you were slightly shocked, you had been running around the village so busy that you hadn't even noticed how quickly the time had passed.
