I awoke to Evan screaming. He was shaking on his bed and crying. As he covered his ears, he screamed even louder. Evan withered in pain and toppled off the bed. When he hit the floor he screamed harder. I tried to go over to him, but I was tangled in my blanket. As I worked on disentangling my body from the piece of cloth, the lights came on. I shielded my eyes from the burning light and heard people yelling. It was the nurses. I thought I heard Cassandra's voice among he cacophony, but I couldn't be sure. Suddenly the noise moved elsewhere. They were carrying Evan out of the room. I kicked free of my soft cocoon and shot to my feet. The blood rushed to my head and I almost fell over again. I ran out of the room, disoriented by the bright lights & the light headed feeling. I followed the sounds of Evan yelling to the medical ward of the asylum. When I entered the room he suddenly got dangerously quiet. The only thing he would do it mutter " I'm sorry... I'm sorry" over and over again. The nurses rushed around him, giving him sedatives in an effort to calm him down. I stared in horror as Evan's face contorted in pain and he started screaming again. Suddenly, I was back in the hallway. Cassandra stood next to me, telling me to stay where I was and that I couldn't be in the room. In a daze I slumped against the wall and slid to the floor. I curled into a ball and covered my ears, hoping to block out the sounds. I blinked back tears, willing myself not to cry.

After an hour, Evan's bloodcurdling screams had been reduced to soft whimpers. I could hear him crying in the room, but I wasn't permitted to see him. He was still way too unstable. As I paced back and forth in the hallway, Cassandra peeked out of the door and said " Kyle? Hey, it's okay. Evan's going to be alright." She reached up and wiped a tear from my cheek. I hadn't realized I was crying.
"When can I see him?"
"Not yet honey, he needs time alone."
" I need to see him."
" Kyle.. The protocol states that the patient-"
" SCREW YOUR PROTOCOL!"
I pushed past Cassandra and into the room. She was too shocked by my outburst to stop me. Evan was sitting on the bed, wrapped up in an orange blanket. He was staring blankly at the wall. I didn't think he noticed me come in, but of course being Evan, he noticed. He turned to me with a look devoid of emotion, then his nose scrunched up. That's when the tears began to fall. I ran over to Evan and pulled him into a hug,he only cried harder. I could feel his tears soaking my shirt. I didn't even care, my friend needed me. After a few moments of silence I finally asked the question.
"Evan. What happened to you earlier?"
"It's nothing..."
" Didn't sound like nothing to me."
"It's fine, really. I'm... Fine."
His breath had become shaky and he sat taking deep breaths. I slowly pulled out of the hug as he tried to collect himself.
"Evan, Who were you apologizing to?"
Evan went completely still.
" You heard that?"
" I heard everything"
Evan drew in a shaky breath and ran his fingers through his hair. It was his nervous habit. After a beat of silence he spoke.
" My parents."
"What?"
"I was apologizing to my parents."
"Evan, they're-"
"Dead. Yes I know, but I need to say sorry."
"Why?"
He looked me in the eyes and whispered
"Because it's my fault they're dead."
