PREFACE:

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be part of a fairy tale, a world where things you imagine are real? Well, for me, they actually did become real.

CHAPTER 1: Old Beginning

My world was an ordinary one, until one day when I was walking home, it suddenly changed.

Hello, my name is Lauren. I used to be an ordinary girl at an ordinary school with ordinary people in it - people who called me a bookworm because I always had my head stuck in a book, reading something new every day. Why be in the real world all the time when you can be in another one, where it's just you and your favourite characters? Amazing things come out of my books, worlds I thought weren't real and were just my imagination. When I was young I dreamed that one day my books would come alive. As they say, be careful what you wish for.

One early frosty tuesday morning I was walking to school, reading a book I had borrowed recently from the library - City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. So far, it's the best book I have ever read. There is a girl named Clary and her world changes when see starts seeing things nobody else can see, and...... Oops, sorry. I am not here to bore you with what happens in my book. Where was I? Ah, yes. I was walking to school when I spotted something out of the corner of my eye, something big and black. In a way it resembled a lion - a big mane, a long tail. You know, like in the lion king? Okay, sorry, I'm doing it again. So, I thought I'd seen a dark lion-like shape, but when I turned to look, it was gone. I figured I must have imagined it, and shook it off my mind. Within ten minutes I reached school, ready to settle in for another boring day. You see, I'm not what you would call a popular kid. No one really wants to hang out with the nerd. Not that I'm complaining; I'm content as long as I have my books and good grades.

After six dragging hours of dull work, I began to head home. But, of course, not without my daily dose of tiresome bullshit. No, that would be too good to be true.

"Hey, nerd! How's it swingin'? Found any new books lately?"

I ignored the catcalls and kept walking.

"Hey, freak! I'm talking to you!"

"I don't want to talk, Jessica," I muttered.

"Oh, yeah? I think you do."

I felt someone grab me around the shoulders and push me down, and next thing I knew my books had flown out of my hands. I heard hoots of laughter and crass remarks but decided to block them out.

Jessica is the queen of Glammer High; she rules here. She thinks she knows everything but really doesn't know anything at all. She has long black hair with red streaks down one side, big, deceitfully innocent brown eyes, and an attitude that's too stuck up for her own good. She and her two minions trot around in cliched 'classy' outfits. But, try as they might, the two underlings never quite manage to pull off the Tough Girl Act as well as the girl they follow around the campus.

"See you around, freak," one of them called out in what she must have imagined was an intimidating tone. In reality she sounded like she was choking on a frog.

I gathered up my books, getting some fingers stomped on in the process, and resumed my walk home.

Except, I never got there.

When I rounded the corner of my street, there was a huge, blue, whirly thing blocking my way, shooting lethal-looking electric sparks everywhere. I felt myself being pulled towards it, as if it were an enormous magnet and I an iron nail. A strong wind was blowing, and I stared in awe as a pair of hands came out of the blue whirl and made to grab me. Too late, I snapped back to my senses and tried in vain to resist the pull. The last thing I saw were a pair of wings - wide, sparkly, blue wings - and then everything went black.
