Chapter 13: The Path to the Unknown
After the morning's trouble, no one spoke of what had happened. We all got ready in our own rooms. Well, I got ready in Breeze's room.
I sighed as I put on the clothes Satiness had laid out for me. There was no mirror in the room, so I couldn't check my reflection. This annoyed me a bit because I hadn't seen what I looked like in days. But, it was still quiet enjoyable.
I looked down at the clothes. The simple blue shirt worked well with the black jeans and boots. Each item fitted well and was comfortable. Who would have guessed that Breeze and I were the same size?
Now, you're probably wondering how her clothes can fit me, since the last time Breeze was here she was only 8. Well, I wondered that too. Then Satiness told me that the magic in this world changes one's clothing as the child grows up. So, technically, the clothes I was wearing might have been Breeze's old clothes, but they were in her current size. Imagine that! Nobody outgrows their clothes in this place.
I shook my head to clear it, and sighed as I picked up my backpack and swung it over my shoulder. I turned around to look at the room one last time. Little did I know that it wasn't really the last time I'd be seeing it.
I found my way to where the other girls were with the help of Satiness' little 'friend'. I had laughed when she showed me her friend. It was a robotic dog with pointed ears, sharp teeth, metallic skin, and a wagging tail. In many ways, it wasn't much different from an ordinary playful dog. I just wouldn't trust my fingers anywhere near its snout.
When I reached the girls, Satiness asked us all to sit down. Once we had settled down, she held up a blue crystal for us to see.
"This crystal was a gift from Breeze. She gave it to me so that whenever I was lost or confused or just wanted to talk to my friend, I could find her. The crystal would guide me to her. If only I would ask it to," she explained softly.
She held the crystal in her hand and murmured something inaudible. A moment later the crystal began to glow a midnight blue, just like Breeze's dress.
"Breeze told me that the crystal will glow a dark shade of blue when I get close to her," said Satiness, "and until then it will float in the direction in which it wants me to go."
I understood what she had in mind, and gave her a nod. The crystal could help us find Breeze a lot faster. We all set out towards the forest.
We followed the crystal deep into the forest. We had been on foot for a long four hours when my legs started to hurt. I began to fall behind the others.
I heard the girls call out to me, asking me to hurry up, but I ignored them, and continued walking at my own pace.
Then I heard a sound beside me. I turned my head to the right, in the direction of the sound. I saw movement in a bush nearby, and started to panic, thinking back to the incident this morning with Ivvy.
I took a step backwards to put some distamce between myself and the bush. I felt my foot get caught in something, and before I could completely register what had happened, I was falling.
I screamed as I fell. There was empty darkness all around me. I landed heavily on my feet, fell onto my back, and felt myself sliding down a tunnel before coming to an abrupt halt when my feet hit a boulder.
The air was thick with dust. I broke into a fit of coughing. When my lungs finally adjusted, I heard my name being called.
But the sound was very faint. Too faint. I realized my ears were ringing. I covered them with my hands and shut my eyes, waiting for the ringing to stop. When it finally did stop, I hesitantly lowered my hands.
I heard my name again, this time louder. "LULU!"
"Are you ok?" I heard Ally over them all.
"Yeah," I called back, "I'm ok. I just fell down a hole."
I looked in front of me. The dust had somewhat settled, and I could tell that the tunnel continued further underground.
"I think there's something down here." I yelled back.
"Leave it," came Minah's reply. "We'll figure out a way for you to get out..."
I shook my head. I was sure I saw a soft glow ahead. "No, there's definitely something down here," I called again.
I heard Satiness gasp loudly. "The crystal. It's glowing darker," she said softly.
I heard a whoosh and a thump, and the next moment Satiness was sliding next to me, laughing. Another dust cloud went up, and Satiness coughed before standing.
"I believe Lulu is right," Satiness spoke loudly. "There's something down here and it might lead to Breeze. Now, come on", you two, and stop being scared." She smirked at me before making her way deeper into the tunnel, with the crystal lighting the way.
I followed after her, and in the background I heard Minah and Ally come down the hole.We had been forging our way through the tunnel for an hour, when it suddenly opened up. The crystal broke away from the cord with which Satiness had tied it around her neck. It began floating upwards, lighting up more and more of our surroundings until we could see the ruins of a city around us. The most magical and damaged city I had seen in Farleyca so far.
