CHAPTER 3: FOLKLORE

"Come sit," Breeze said, patting a log large enough to seat both of us. "I must tell you something before we enter the town."

She sighed when I sat down. "This is going to take a while, all right?" I nodded. "The city we're travelling to is, no, has - it has traditions. It has a structure that you have to respect."

Breeze looked at the rising buildings and scratched her chin. "Don't say anything stupid, they will kill you for that. Don't let your emotions control you. If they say something rude don't respond, that would be treason. They don't have any emotions, they are cold to everyone. It's just who they are."

Okay, if you're not confused then you're following better than I was.

"Hold up. Who are they?" I said.

Breeze gave me a pained look. "They are dragons," she said.

So, I had been right; she was crazy. "Dragons. You expect me to believe there are dragons? They are a thing of myths and fairy tales. And you are saying that these 'dragons' can communicate with us? That goes against even legends."

"You interrupted me. These dragons, they can change into human form. Although they have markings on their hands in the colour of their scales. So, one can always tell who they are.

"We'll have to meet the dragon Queen in person. Remember, she will kill you if you are rude. Always watch your words. Always. Don't ask too many questions because they will answer them truthfully and they don't know when not to say something.

Now, we must go see the dragon Queen," she finished, getting up.

"Whoa. You expect me to believe this crazy story about dragons," I said quickly, getting up too. I was starting to think this Breeze person was crazy. And who names there child Breeze, anyway? "No. I'm not going anywhere to see some 'dragon queen'," I added.

"But, you must. We need to find out who you really are, why you could get through the portal, and why you can see us," said Breeze.

"No way. I'm staying right here," I persisted.

"Alright. Fine. Be like that," Breeze said. She turned away and started walking towards the town.

"I'm not coming! Whatever you do or say won't change my mind," I called after her.

"That's okay! You can spend the night with the werewolves," she called back. "They love to hunt at night in the forest."

I looked around me nervously, trying to find out if there really were any werewolves. "Haha. That's funny," I said, without a hint of amusement. "You just keep walking."

"Mm-hmm, will do."

I looked around me again, starting to panic now."Wait! Okay, okay, you win."I ran after her. "Wait for me!"

I swear I could hear Breeze laughing. She stopped abruptly at the end of the hill, right in front of the town, causing me to stumble right into her. I stepped back and around her, to find myself looking at a wall riddled with vines surrounding the city. There was a huge arched entryway. Inscribed in the stone at the head of the arch was the word INCENDIUM.

Breeze gestured to the archway.

"Welcome to the dragon city."
